Since King’s death, historians and others across the political spectrum have hotly contested the meaning of his legacy. Living in the shadow of Nazism and Stalin, King did not share the faith of most mainstream liberals in the gradual improvement of humankind and human society. This month we celebrate another birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights hero who was gunned down in Memphis in April 1968 at the age of 39.

You wouldn’t know Piedmont anymore—my Piedmont, I mean—the town in West Virginia where I learned to be a colored boy. The 1950s in Piedmont was a sepia time, or at least that’s the color my memory has given it. People were always proud to be from Piedmont—nestled against a wall of mountains, smack-dab on the banks of the mighty Potomac. We knew God gave America no more beautiful location.
