Here at the end of this decade, even the most avid watchers of reality television are well aware that the shows that they faithfully follow are not accurate, unimpeded presentations of real events. From slice-of-life shows to competition series, reality TV is crafted and shaped by everyone from the production crew to network executives. On-camera participants rarely have absolute control, especially in shows that feature a new cast every season.

Beisel: "I did not make the team under circumstances I am proud of"
I don’t think anyone predicted it coming into the meet, but Leah Smith is your National Champion in the women’s 400 IM. Smith turned 4th after the fly, and then absolutely took over on backstroke, turning in 2:12.21 for a 2.6 second lead. She only extended her lead after that, including a blistering 1:01.5 free leg, to touch in 4:33.86. She now sits #3 in the world this year. That wasn’t the only surprise of the race.

New US Swim Star Maya DiRado Starts with Silver, and Retirement Is Just Ahead
The USA’s Maya DiRado swam her heart out Saturday night, going faster than ever before in the grueling 400-meter individual medley. But even though DiRado swam the race of her life, she was nowhere near the winner, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, who absolutely obliterated the world record. All of which was perfectly fine with DiRado, who proved it’s possible to wear a gold-medal smile even when the color of one’s medal is silver. DiRado beamed when interviewed poolside on NBC afterward.

Q & A With Birthday Girl Elizabeth Beisel
Beisel: I grew up in the Ocean State, so being safe around the water was something my parents were adamant about when I was a kid. Diving was my first sport, but I was so bad that even my mom was suggesting “hey, maybe the swim team will work out better for you.” I’m really glad I chose to swim as it has turned out pretty well. Beisel: One of my favorite moments would have to be making my first Olympic team.
Michael Phelps enters 200 fly among 6 races at Charlotte Pro Swim, psych sheets released
Michael Phelps continues to lengthen his event ranges post-comeback, entering the 200 butterfly at the Arena Pro Swim Series Charlotte meet. Barring a scratch, that would be Phelps’ first 200 fly since the London 2012 Olympics. Phelps, of course, swam the 400 free at the Mesa stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series, and with the reputations of him and coach Bob Bowman to be aggressive with swimming longer races at mid-season meets, it seems very likely we’ll see Phelps go through with his 200 fly entry.
Leverenz, Ledecky, Hosszu trail Beisel by just 3.5 points in Pro Swim Series standings after Mesa
The women’s points race in the Arena Pro Swim Series is heating up with just two stops remaining; in Mesa, Caitlin Leverenz, Katie Ledecky and Katinka Hosszu all made huge strides in running down points leader Elizabeth Beisel. It was an uncharacteristically quiet weekend for Beisel, who earned no points in Mesa despite swimming 6 events. Meanwhile, the aforementioned trio took advantage to pull into a three-way tie for second, just 3.5 points back of Beisel.
Beisel & Dwyer add to Arena Pro Swim Series points leads
At the halfway point of the 2014-2015 Arena Pro Swim Series, Elizabeth Beisel and Conor Dwyer maintain strong leads. The former Florida training partners sit at 38.5 and 38 points, respectively, to lead the tours handily with three stops to go. That lead for Beisel was despite swimming just one event in Orlando. An injury prevented the Florida Gator pro from swimming her usual tough schedule, but she did manage to win the 400 free.
