Goodbye, Koi By Jack Wong Orchard Books (an imprint of Scholastic) $19.99 ISBN: 978-1-338-83099-6 Ages 3-6 On shelves September 15th There is, I feel compelled to tell you, a danger in plumbing your own personal history for a picture book. Personal histories can be exciting things. Think of Wishes by Mượn Thị Văn about escaping Vietnam, or the antics of Patricia Polacco’s terrible sibling in My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother. But it’s easy for memory to swerve too closely towards nostalgia.

What Is a Pirate? Creators Melinda Beatty and Stefano Tambellini Hash It Out

A bookseller and an illustrator walk into a bar… So there was this book out in 2024 that, in my own personal opinion, didn’t really get enough attention. It was one of those Halloween-adjacent picture books that definitely invoke a season without explicitly discussing it. The title? The Witch’s Table by Melinda Beatty (a bookseller for Curious Iguana in Frederick, MD) and illustrated by Stefano Tambellini. I dunno, it was just a charmer.

Publisher Preview: Levine Querido (Fall/Winter 2026)

By gum, it’s not fall until I SAY it’s fall! And it ain’t fall. Yet. We’re close, though. So close that I think that it would behoove us to take a dip into Levine Querido’s upcoming autumnal options. It was Travis Jonker who pointed out that this company’s fall release of Chooch Helped has been the only fall released Caldecott Award winner in the 2020s. For that reason alone, you probably want to see what they’ve got on the roster this coming season.
