I attended the University of South Carolina, graduating in 2003 Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in English. During my undergrad, I founded The Letter Olive, a literary magazine still published by Carolina students today. I continued at Carolina for an MFA in fiction and most of a Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric. We homeschool our kids. I can make up a lot of reasons why we homeschool. We want more time together as a family. We want to keep the kids sheltered for a while longer. Our son with ADHD learns better at home. We want more time for art projects. Those reasons are partly true, but the real reason is much bigger: I don't want to raise passive little worker bees who grow up doing and buying whatever they're told to.

Making less than $250K a year can still feel tight for middle-class families. My husband teaches public high school, and thanks to the vagaries of geography, his salary puts us firmly in the middle class. We own a home and don't lack for much, but we also don't have much extra. Anyone who assumes families making a cool quarter of a million dollars live the way we do is kidding themselves.
