1 Introduction Long-term monitoring and use of historical datasets facilitate a deeper understanding of the drivers and effects of global change on biodiversity in many ecosystems, at multiple scales, and along various axes of biodiversity (Magurran et al. 2010). For instance, comparing kelp surveys from 1993 to 1995 to those from 2017 to 2018, Starko et al. (2019) found that broad-scale stressors resulted in a decrease in kelp diversity in Barkley Sound, British Columbia (BC), Canada.
