Elizabeth Schmidt is professor emeritus of history at Loyola University Maryland and Past President of the African Studies Association. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A scholar-activist, she has written about US involvement in apartheid South Africa, women under colonialism in Zimbabwe, the nationalist movement in Guinea, and foreign intervention in Africa from the Cold War to the war on terror. I not a professional journalist, but rather, an academic who engages in journalism to reach a wider, public audience.

Yes--a manual one before grad school, when I graduated to electric!

It can dangerous--promoting theories without evidence--and oversimplifying complex issues with sound bites.
