BOOK BEAT: Mystery wines up in romance tale
Bitter Roots By Ellen Crosby Severn House $24.99, Kindle As the author of a light romance novel I consider a “go to,” the name of Ellen Crosby is very near the top of the list, so when I saw her “Bitter Roots” in the Wine Country Mystery series, no actual decision was needed to add that title to my requests for a review copy. When the story opens, plans for a wedding are well underway, but the vineyard that was to be the setting is slowly dying, the victim of diseased plants.
A Cold War Journalist’s Favorite Russian Spy Novels
The only time in my life I got a job I didn’t apply for it was midnight and I was in my nightgown. It’s not what you’re thinking. In 1989 my family and I were living in Moscow when it was still the USSR. My husband, the first Voice of America correspondent to be sent to the Soviet Union, was on the phone with a friend from ABC News discussing a story they both were on deadline to file.
Review | NetGalley
Review by Kristina A, Reviewer Last updated on 03 Apr 2022 Bitter Roots by Ellen Crosby is the twelfth A Wine Country Mystery. I did not know Bitter Roots was part of a series when I requested the book. Bitter Roots can be read as a standalone since the author provides all the necessary background information. However, I believe it would have helped me if I had at least read the first book in the series, The Merlot Murders.
A Cozy Mystery Roundup
I have to admit that the cozy mystery genre is one of my favorites. They are usually fast and fun reads, and if you are a regular reader of a series, the characters are familiar. It always seems nice to get an update of what’s going on in their lives. Long Paw of the Law By Diane Kelly St. Martin’s Press Here is the seventh of Diane Kelly’s Paw Enforcement series, featuring Texas police officer Megan Luz and her K-9 partner Brigit.
Why We Love Looking for Hidden Symbols-In Thrillers and In Real Life
The U.S. Capitol tour guide looked nervous and I knew why. I was asking too many questions. In the post-9/11 era this was the kind of thing that could get you in trouble, especially in Washington, D.C. Finally, in Statuary Hall she confronted me and asked what was up. Many years ago I served as the economic advisor to a U.S. Senator at a time when almost everywhere on the Hill, including a labyrinthine maze of tunnels, was accessible to staff and even to visitors.

Mystery Scene
Ellen Crosby delights with the ninth entry in her Virginia Wine Country Mysteries series. Lucie Montgomery is stunned when a human skull is unearthed at her Montgomery Estate Vineyard in Atoka, Virginia, nestled in the midst of horse and hunt country. When examined by a forensic anthropologist, Lucie is told the skull was likely from the mid-1800s, female, and apparently murdered.

Walter Isaacson, who recently authored the door-stopping, New York Times bestselling biography of Steve Jobs, turns his attention to Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci in his latest book. Careful scouring of Leonardo’s notebooks, located variously in the United States, France, England and Italy, enabled Isaacson to write a work of breathtaking scope and intimacy.

Four new mysteries to cozy up with this winter
Charles Finch reviews four very different volumes, united by strong doses of suspense: a former O.J. prosecutor’s murder mystery, a Spanish noir, an anthology of stories populated by heavyweight writers, and a vineyard cozy. In Sunlight or In Shadow: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper **** out of four stars This absolutely superb anthology starts out with two advantages: a true legend at the helm in crime writer Lawrence Block, and a fascinating concept.
