What is the Hungry Gap?
The Hungry Gap is the hardest time of year for UK farmers: a few weeks, usually in April, May and early June, after the winter crops have ended but before the new season’s plantings are ready to harvest. It all comes down to the UK’s latitude. We sit right at the geographical limit for many spring crops, which would not survive our cold winter temperatures if grown any earlier.
A fragile spring
News from the farm | Farming | Soil Guy Singh-Watson 9th March 2022 As the sun climbs, the days lengthen, and the soil warms, I find that age has done nothing to dampen the excitement I feel at the gathering, irrepressible return of life in spring. Watching the swelling walnut buds, pregnant with life and promise, I can almost believe that – however much oil we burn, and however many bombs we throw at each other – this force is unstoppable, and may yet survive us.
Our emissions, our responsibility
News from the farm | Climate change Guy Singh-Watson 31st March 2021 Type ‘carbon offsetting’ into the web, and a multitude of sites will offer to ease your guilt about flying, driving or consumption, usually by planting trees in a distant land, mediated by newly founded companies trading in carbon. The implication is that for a very modest sum, perhaps £100 per year, you will have done your bit and can carry on as usual.
Believe in each other, not in markets
News from the farm | Politics | Ethical business Guy Singh-Watson 24th March 2021 'The reason we have the vaccine success is because of capitalism, because of greed, my friends.' So Boris Johnson is reported as saying this week. Well, the vaccines were actually developed in publicly funded universities, and administered by a publicly funded NHS, within a law-abiding society, bound by a broadly accepted (if fragmenting) social contract.

Helping us through the Hungry Gap
News from the farm | Farming Flemming Andersen 18th March 2021 Will it be too much, I thought, when I asked Paco, Sebastian, Pepe, Manuel, and our other Spanish growers and friends last spring if they would please plant more produce for us? During the first lockdown, the request for our veg boxes rose considerably, and we took great care to keep them filled with seasonal veg.
Juicing, blending and blitzing - what’s the difference?
Recipes | Eating & drinking Ellen Warrell 18th February 2021 Fresh juices and smoothies are often spoken of in the same breath. Superficially they are very similar; both colourful cocktails, good veg box user-uppers, and tasty shortcuts towards your 5-a-day. But from a culinary perspective, they’re wholly different beasts.
If not now, then when?
News from the farm | Environment & ethics Guy Singh-Watson 11th November 2020 In 2006, Riverford completed our first environmental impact assessment with Exeter University. Back then it was hard to get staff interested, and even harder to make the changes recommended. But we did make changes: we abandoned our well-meaning but ill-judged use of degradable (not compostable) plastic, which research showed to be worse for the environment than conventional plastic.
