‘To finish is to win’: Iconic equestrian event to provide the ultimate test
The Shahzada Memorial Endurance Test is exactly that: a test of endurance over 400 kilometres of challenging country over five consecutive days. The annual event based at St Albans has been running since the early 1980s and has seen many endurance legends made, both horses and riders. It will take over the village with the ride officially beginning on Monday, 24 August until Friday, 28 August.

ELKS SECURE FUNDING FOR SEATING UPGRADE
Spectators at the Glen Innes Elks home fixtures will now have somewhere to sit and enjoy the spectacle with Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan delivering funding for new seating. Mr Moylan secured $15,860 for the club to purchase grandstand seats through the Local Sport Grant Program. The Elks have around 50 to 60 players and field a men’s and a women’s team in the New England Rugby Union competition, which begins with a Glen Innes home game against the Barbarians on 18 April.
49 years of endurance in the Warrumbungles with an international flavour
This year’s weekend of events is going up a notch. In addition to the usual 7, 20, 40, and 80-kilometre events (with 120km event added this year), there are also international-standard FEI-level rides. With more endurance riders registered worldwide than the Olympic discipline of eventing, the Tooraweenah Club partnered with Canobolas Endurance Riders to give Australian competitors the opportunity to qualify for overseas international events.
Full steam ahead for Watagan equestrian event
After a season of weather disruptions, riders are set to return to Werakata National Park this weekend for the Watagan Mountains Endurance Ride, offering distances from 20 to 80km. Club hoping wet weather holds off for annual equine event
The first weekend in August will see horses and riders take on the state forest tracks across a variety of endurance rides on offer via Kiwarrak Endurance Club. Rides will run on Saturday and Sunday with shorter distances of 20 kilometres right through to a competitive 80km ride. The club missed out on running an event in 2024 but secretary Linda Henley said things are shaping up well for the 2025 ride.
Riders gear up for greater Sydney endurance ride
The Sydney Region Endurance Riders club are due to host the annual Mountain Lagoon Endurance Ride this weekend (15 and 16 March) and has been busy marking out tracks, gathering the caterers and sorting out any last-minute hassles. Only one thing stands in their way – the wet weather associated with cyclone Alfred – but ride secretary Faith Robinson is confident the coming weekend will clear up and the ride will go on. “Entries have been slow so far,” she said.
Scenic trails ready for endurance riders
Held at Mt Stromlo this Saturday and Sunday (1 and 2 March), the ride is a mix of bush and urban environments and caters for all levels of endurance riders and their mounts. Following on from the recent success of the Belubula Endurance Riders club event at Neville, serious competitors and casual participants will line up for this weekend’s 20 kilometre, 40km and 80km events.

Blues coach 'very impressed' by knockout performance
The Armidale Blues might have only come away with the runners-up prize at their annual knockout but coach Riley Hopwood said the performance far exceeded his expectations. A host of new and young faces lined up for the Blues at Saturday's event and they made it all the way to the final before being beaten by Central North heavyweights, the Tamworth Pirates. "I was actually very impressed the boys," Hopwood said. "To be honest I wasn't expecting to go as good as we did.
Shelton and Fitzgerald combine for Inverell Cup double
Grafton-based trainer John Shelton and Taree apprentice Mollie Fitzgerald combined for not one, but the two feature races on Inverell Cup day. The weather threatened to put an early end to the day with an already heavy track but it held off for the full eight races. A light shower cleared just before the Inverell Shorts where Fitzgerald and Shelton combined for a massive three-and-a-half length win with Another Spirit. The main race of the day, the Inverell Cup, followed.

The sport of endurance has taken Jodie Salinas all around the world. And now she's been crowned one of the globe's best. Salinas rode in the 160 kilometre FEI Endurance World Championships in Batheed, United Arab Emirates on February 25. From the 118 starters from 36 nations, Salinas finished fifth aboard Baroud Rio in the championship. Bahrain's Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa was the overall winner. Salinas grew up in Glen Innes in NSW's Northern Tablelands, riding as much as she could.

Jackson, who is also a music producer, posted a video of his sheep barracking for the mighty NSW Blues before Wednesday's decider on his Electric Postman Facebook page.
