Keir Starmer has told the public in his New Year message that “2023 is a new chapter for Britain” and urged people to “look forward to that with hope”. In a short video clip released today, the Labour leader warned that “for hope to flourish, Britain needs to change” and promised that his party would “set out the case for change” in the coming year. “The case for a new Britain. The case for hope. A country where we grow the economy for everyone, not just a privileged few,” Starmer said.

Labour has warned that midnight on December 31st will be the moment that the Tories officially break their manifesto pledge to deliver “80% of UK trade covered by free trade agreements within the next three years” by the end of 2022.

Research published as a disastrous year for the Tories draws to an end has shown that Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has a 26-point poll lead over the Conservatives. According to the People Polling survey, commissioned by GB News and published on Thursday, 45% of people reported that they would back Labour in a general election. Just 19% told the pollster that they would vote Conservative.
