What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a reporter for "The Chicago Flame," my university newspaper. I co-founded "Inferno," a pull-out entertainment magazine in the paper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Starting in 6th grade, I used a typewriter regularly under the encouragement of my teacher, Bette Mitchell, to develop and refine my skills.
How is social media changing news?
It is making travel limmediate and accessible but may limit the scope of traditional (print) travel writing.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Hilly Johnson, as played by Rosalind Russell in "His Girl Friday"
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is best, but phone calls are appreciated, too.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My brain! And an Apple desktop and laptop, iPhone, camera, and WordPress among others.

I want to be followed by editors and publicists seeking a writer with style and substance who understands what being an "influencer" is about
Why did you become a journalist?
Writing + editing enabled me to have a voice (as I am from a disadvantaged background), give others a voice, and defy expectations.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I am proud of my "Malibu Times" cover stories about Dick Van Dyke and James Cameron, and visiting over 70 countries for travel assignments.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
In addition to networking and reading writers you admire, always be open to constructive criticism and face industry politics with courage.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime!--Have computer and cell will travel. However, be sure you are familiar with my publications and story angles first.

Pitches that allow me to profile individuals with exceptional achievements. Ask me about Akira Kitade, Dick Van Dyke, and Yangzom Brauen.
What's your favorite drink?
I have tried many amazing cocktails beverage writer, but always love a gin-based cocktail or a well-crafted Manhattan.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
At museums, food festivals, writing workshops or traveling somewhere interesting.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Travel features can be so much more when extra research is done to add history and commentary from locals to add context and perspective.
