A sestina on sunsetting content
Note: The sestina is a poetic form. It’s constructed of six stanzas, of which each contain six lines. In the first stanza, the last word of each line is reused throughout the poem, to end the lines in each subsequent stanza, following a set pattern. We’ve used our blog to write about creating new content, but we haven’t discussed managing published pages. Specifically, when to delete them. In the content design world, we call this concept “sunsetting.” Sunsetting can be contentious in government.
Lean on me: Asking for help on the content team
Our content squad is made of folks with a wide range of backgrounds and skills — we put this to good use by regularly asking each other for help with projects. Here’s a diagrammatic look into some of our recent collaboration. One of my projects involves a substantial content migration. I’ve done lots of plain language work, but I’ve never shepherded this much content from one place to another.
Looking at the different ways to test content
Emileigh is a content designer at 18F, and Christine is a content strategist who works with the Government Digital Service (GDS) in the UK. They met for the first time on a sweltering summer day in D.C. A quick cup of (iced) coffee turned into a months-long, transatlantic conversation on the different ways writers can test online content to see whether it needs improving. This post was first published on the GDS blog.
Guest post: looking at the different ways to test content
Today we hear from two content experts sharing their thoughts about testing content. Christine works with GDS as a trainer, and is a content strategist. Emileigh is a lead content designer and strategist working at 18F in the USA. They met for the first time on a sweltering summer day in Washington, DC. A quick cup of (iced) coffee turned into a months-long, transatlantic conversation on the different ways writers can test online content to see whether it needs improving.
What's in a name: Understanding and using government acronyms
The “alphabet soup” of government acronyms is a well-documented frustration — both among federal employees and the public we serve. Abbreviations can be confusing. They mystify meaning. They read like riddles. And they’re one of things we get asked about the most. We have an acronyms section in our Content Guide, a resource we heartily recommend.
What Estonia can teach us about the future of government records
Who are you? More specifically, who are you to the U.S. government? You have a legal name, a tax ID, and a Social Security or immigration number. You might also have a voter registration, a driver’s license, a passport, a government employment card. Each of these identifiers is discrete. Your tax ID doesn’t talk to your driver’s license. You can’t use your Social Security number to operate a car. Most of us keep track of these diverse, disconnected items without much thought. But is there a simpler way?
Building a better welcome wagon
Being the new kid is tough. And at 18F, we bring in newbies every two weeks. As our team expands to meet federal digital needs, we've learned to appreciate documentation for its ability to turn new hires into self-sufficient contributors quickly, with minimal disruption to the organization. Some agencies require months of training to fully integrate a new hire into the workplace. Here at 18F, our process lasts a single day.
