1 Introduction Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains the leading direct cause of maternal mortality during or up to 6 weeks after the end of pregnancy in the United Kingdom, accounting for over 10% of maternal deaths [1]. When nonfatal, complications from VTE include severe postthrombotic syndrome in approximately 5%–10% of cases, [2] while in all cases there is the need for medium-term anticoagulation.
