Year 12 aiming for Oxford.
Original post by Emilia Brown Just wondering, does reading wider also count as supercurriculars, or is it more like essay competitions, etc? It would count but the focus is what else have you done beyond your core curriculum that demonstrates your interest and appreciation of your subject. According to Oxbridge: How to make your application stand out Before you apply, you should explore the subject that you’re interested in beyond what you’ve learnt at school, sixth form or college.
Big Brother Is Coming Closer
The issue of mass surveillance is a growing worry; its future undetermined and its current state often unknown. In the UK, the government’s increasing reliance on big data and video surveillance has sparked growing concern for the privacy of the general public. In London, it has been estimated that there is one CCTV camera for every 14 people.
2017: What Will Become of You?
The PRS Symposium will explore how we can deal with political risks in this new political age. The political earthquakes of 2016 have made evident that political risk has become increasingly hard to understand and manage. Whereas previously, investors were cautious over the unpredictability of emerging markets, Europe and the U.S.A. have now demonstrated that they too are a source of volatility. 2017 is likely to be a bearer of more political upheaval. What will we meet along the path of Brexit?
Taking Back Raqqa
In June 2014, IS declared the city of Raqqa, in Northern Syria, the capital of their caliphate. Since then it has enticed around 7,000 ISIS fighters, and been a base for the terrorist group’s central planning of attacks, including those in the West, such as last November’s massacre in Paris. It is now also a home to many of the 27,000 foreign fighters, mainly from Europe and North Africa, who have been persuaded by propaganda to fight for IS.
Bag from the Dead: Beanbags Return to the Library
Amidst turbulent times, the UGM on Thursday 10th November was able to put to rest an issue at the core of LSE identity: the reinstatement of beanbags on the library’s lower ground floor. With a Facebook event page reaching around 22,000 views, the 20 students attending the raucous debate waited with baited breath, as the passionate pleas and fervent condemnations of the debate unfolded.
The Transition to Adulthood
Becoming an ‘adult’ is not a transition which comes naturally for some, and it’s the small things in life which make you realise that you may be one of the sorry many for whom this is the case. It can hit you at any time. In the morning, after pouring too much water into your porridge pot, making a liquid goo out of what should be one of the easiest breakfasts on the planet, or on the phone to British Gas when it becomes clear that actually you have no idea how the energy meter works.
4 Weeks In | Beaver Online
It’s 8.51pm and I’m lying in bed listening to Disney songs wondering who I’ve become. I don’t have a Goldman Sachs internship lined up, I’m nearly 20 and still dressing up as a jellyfish for AU, and instead of sipping red wine at classy jazz nights or poetry recitals the only drink in my fridge is Tesco own-brand vodka, which (again) will probably end up being mixed with Tesco own-brand cola. It’s the start of week 4.
Why We Love The Saw Swee Hock Café
It has many times been said that everyone has one story in them: a novel, a play, a collection of epic poetry. I am pretty much convinced that my one story was my first ‘restaurant review’. It was a bold but not overly-audacious piece that aimed to provide specific analysis, but according to my friends, ‘didn’t really have a point’. More of a forgettable Percy Jackson than a Harry Potter, it wasn’t outstanding, but I hope provided reasonable entertainment.
