This week on IG I got hundreds of DMs in response to a story I shared about my regrets around being a competitive sports kid. What I heard from mom after mom was - it feels like my only option is travel teams/competitive sports.
Happy Monday, everyone! It’s midterms season and the question on everyone’s mind is: “ok but what do I actually DO?” I recently talked to Swing Left’s Yasmin Radjy about how people can get involved this cycle. After 2024, Swing Left was one of the only groups that did an in-depth analysis of what went wrong and then pivoted to create new programs that incorporated those learnings.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: A Fake Tradwife Dating Sting, JD Vance at Yale & the First New Wild Cat in 100 Years
Plus Gloria Steinem’s final memoir giveaway Hi friends, If you follow me on IG you may know that I’ve been having a lot of iron deficiency issues due in part to perimenopause. I’m curious how much better I’ll feel once I get an iron infusion, but I’ve heard from lots of you that it’s been life-changing.
THE OUTLOOK: Moms, Menopause and Iran Pause - yet Congress is headed home.
Starting off with some good news from Google Trends: Voter registration is the top trending topic in the US this week (!!!) Trump and his acolytes are clearly going to do the most to try to limit people’s vote. —> The two most important things people should do are simple: (1) check your voter registration and (2) vote as early as possible! —> And possibly a third thing … which is to tell everyone you know to do the same! So yesterday the House officially closed shop until after the election.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: A $5,000 Bribe (?), Missouri’s Maps & Lindsay Clancy
Hi Everyone, Congress was OOO all week, it’s 53 days to Election Day. Next week, the House and Senate are set to return with a vote on a crypto market-structure bill; it will be interesting to see if they take up anything about AI. Also, next Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day. Johnson has canceled the last two September work weeks, that means next week is the House’s last week of voting before the election.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Don Jr. investigated by Congress, Young men don’t think conservative women should lead (?) & Burrata-maxxing
Hello from Wisconsin, where Kate Duffy & I are doing a Door County girls' weekend! I think we are at an interesting inflection point in society, 6 years after the pandemic began breaking people’s socializing norms and with social media fully ensconced in our lives - we are seeking more and more ways to get together offline.
WEDNESDAY OUTLOOK: Mail-in ballot bans (?), Iran War Escalation & Anti-Choice FDA nominee
Hi Everyone Happy final week of August; Congress still OOO, the House comes back Monday, Aug 31, and the Senate on Sept 14. It’s 69 days to Election Day. I’m sure you have heard the big legal news this week: in a shadow docket ruling on Monday, the Supreme Court decided a case about President Trump’s efforts to curtail mail-in voting. The issue is an Executive Order in which Trump (essentially) tells the USPS to use DHS-created lists of people allowed to vote and to transmit only their ballots.
READER FAVORITES: The Big Comment-Section Book List
On Friday, I posted a summer book roundup and asked for your favorite books in the comments! And you delivered nearly 200 book recommendations. Check out my list here: Today I have a special Sunday delivery for paid subscribers: books endorsed by the EYP community! Of course, add more in the comments below - we are all always searching for MORE GOOD READS!!
Big Summer Book Post
Hello Everyone! I’m writing to you from Maine, where I have been listening to books, needlepointing, taking long walks and soaking up this one precious life! Usually I listen to 150 audiobooks a year (last year was 196) but so far this year I’m only at 64, but this week I’ve finished a few: Whistler, Ann Patchett. → Bookshop | Amazon The Keeper, Tana French. → Bookshop | Amazon The Land and Its People, David Sedaris. → Bookshop | Amazon An Event in Autumn, Henning Mankell.
Yesteryear Is Not Just a Book About Tradwives
Warning: this article contains Yesteryear spoilers. Read at your own discretion. A woman wakes up in a house with no electricity. The children in the next room are filthy, and she does not recognize them. Her husband appears in a cowboy hat, brandishing an ax. It appears to be 1855. And the first explanation that occurs to our main character, before God, before Satan, before time travel, is that she is on a reality show. Somewhere in the rafters there must be a camera.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Byebye Karoline, Tony P hates you too, & Where are the aliens?
Hi everyone, We’re in those final deep weeks of summer when I’m trying to savor and extend every moment. To relish the languor required by the heat, to enjoy the tomatoes, peaches and corn and to fill my well for a heated political fall. We are fun, join us here at EYP! In the news: There was a big election this week, with the headline coming out of Wisconsin being moderate David Crowley eke-ing out a close win over Francesca Hong. Peggy Flanagan also beat Angie Craig in Minnesota.
MONDAY OUTLOOK: Primary DAYS, No Deals in the wars and the End of Woke 1?
Happy Monday everyone! Both chambers out for the next couple weeks, House returns Monday, Aug 31 and the Senate returns Monday, Sept 14. This tuesday there are Primaries in five states, Connecticut, Minnesota, South Carolina, Vermont and Wisconsin, which includes the special election to replace Lindsey Graham. In South Carolina, there will be a runoff on Aug 25th if no single candidate (there are a lot) gets a majority.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: National Abortion Ban (?), The girlies are wearing bandanas & Making friends with a crow (life goal!)
Hi friends, It seems that Todd Blanche, Trump’s former personal attorney, is going to become our Attorney General. (Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski are the only Republican noes - there needs to be three + McConnell’s absensce.) Blanche sucks and is an anti-choice footsoldier.
MONDAY OUTLOOK: Attorney General in the bag & lecherous creeps/domestic abusers in the House
Happy first Monday of August, when everyone wants to get the fuck out of DC as quickly as possible. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis announced their support for Todd Blanche as Attorney Genearl today. To get their support, Blanche (as Acting AG) issued two documents: confirming the termination of the $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund and affirming that the immunity deal from Trump’s IRS settlement doesn’t cover any future IRS audits for the Trump family.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: No Influencers (!!) Signs, Are the Monarch's back, Trump Attorney Stalled
Hi! You may recall my recent foray into basket making - and in particular, I made a Nantucket Basket, which is a gorgeous tight-weaving style that sometimes people use to make purses (a style which has been trending for a couple years). Four Winds Craft Guild is a shop in downtown Nantucket that sells said baskets. The business has been in John Sylvia’s family since 1927. The baskets take months to weave by hand and run from about $325 to $3,200, they are a wonderful American art form.
MONDAY OUTLOOK: The Senate Alone, a War on Pause, and the Deportation Flights That Start This Week
Happy Monday. The House left town until the end of August, which means the Senate is the only game in Washington for the next two weeks - if they stay in town through August 7th as planned. Here is your week ahead: More than 300,000 Haitians are losing their legal status and their work authorization as the Department of Homeland Security’s Temporary Protected Status termination takes effect, and ICE has already drawn up the enforcement plan.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Dystopian Comic Book, How I feel about AI & Coral Reefs.
Hey Everyone - I’m a pretty organized person by nature (just look at the drawers in my kitchen and you’ll get a feel for my true self). But one of the things that happened in my dying era was I got WAY behind on the admin of life. Turns out when you have a severe brain disease it’s very hard to organize your inbox and fill out forms.
MONDAY OUTLOOK: The War Widens as Washington Races the Recess Clock
Happy Monday. This week was supposed to be about clearing the decks before Congress goes on summer recess - the Senate and House won’t be back at the same time till mid-September. However, U.S. forces are bombing Iran for a ninth straight day, three American service members have been killed since Friday, and oil has cleared $90. This evening the news is reporting that Iran-Backed Houthis have initiated a blockade of the red sea which will put further pressure on energy markets.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Dems can flip shit, Rasberry sugar in the sky & ban child marriage.
Hi Everyone! Diarrhea outbreak. Smoke filling our lungs. It's a thousand degrees, Trump giving a primetime address; the stations won’t even air. What even is this fucking timeline? It is mid-July, and frankly, come September, we are all going to need to be TAPPED THE FUCK IN to midterms. This election cycle is a legit existential threat to democracy, and I plan on being locked in. But at 41 and perimenopausal AF, I cannot be locked in all the time.
MONDAY OUTLOOK: The War Continues, Congress Comes Back, and Confirmation Week Begins
Happy Monday. The U.S. is once again attacking Iran, both chambers are back from the Fourth of July recess, and the confirmation calendar is stacked — an attorney general, a spy chief, a labor secretary, and a Fed chair’s first trip to the witness table, all by Thursday. Here’s your week ahead — right after one very important piece of business: My friend Jo Piazza’s new novel, The Parisian Heist, is out TOMORROW, and you should buy it right now.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Your 401(k), the bees are being saved & how to fight the diarrhea parasite
Hi Everyone - I hope you had a good Fourth of July and survived the heat dome. I drank alcohol and went in a pool and ate grilled food, god bless America.
Emily Amick on why civic engagement is the antidote to your doom spiral
Emily Amick is a lawyer, journalist, and political analyst who served as counsel to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. She created @EmilyinYourPhone to give people her insider insight into the political process and help them find ways they can take action. Her first book DEMOCRACY IN RETROGRADE: How to Make Changes Big and Small in Our Country and in Our Lives was an instant New York Times bestseller.
I found a secret lib patriotism campaign
Every time I pre-game the Fourth of July online, a flag sweater roundup here, a post about guzzling hot dogs and mainlining patriotism there, my DMs fill up with the same note: Patriotism is Republican-coded. The flag isn’t ours. How can you post that, right now, in this economy of horrors? I get the instinct. But I don’t accept the premise.
MONDAY OUTLOOK: The Court on Unitary Executive Theory, a 250th Birthday, and the Pre-Recess Sprint
The justices took the bench this morning and handed down four decisions. Four big cases, birthright citizenship among them, are still coming (likely tomorrow). The rundown: Trump v. Slaughter (6-3). The Court ruled the president can fire FTC commissioners at will, overruling what was left of 90-year-old Humphrey’s Executor (another blow for stare decisis on this court) and stripping for-cause protection from independent agencies across the government.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: $45 Million Buys a Friendship, SCOTUS update & the Jigsaw Boom
Hi Friends, I am headed to the beach next week with my best friend and looking forward to emptying my brain for a bit. Congress is on break for a few weeks and, frankly, I’m not expecting them to do much of anything until after midterms. I have been feeling increasingly overwhelmed by the talking-head political content I’m consuming online.
MONDAY OUTLOOK: Iran’s 60-Day Clock, the SCOTUS Endgame, a Mamdani Primary Test, and Greenspan at 100
Both chambers are back, the Supreme Court has days left to hand down its biggest rulings, and New York votes Tuesday in a primary that doubles as a referendum on its new mayor. U.S. and Iranian negotiators wrapped a tense round in Switzerland over the weekend with a “road map” to a final deal within 60 days, mediators Qatar and Pakistan announced, and technical talks are set to continue through the week.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Supreme Court rules on Guns, How to make friends & Ossoff for President?
Hi friends - Two things are worth your attention as we head into the weekend. First, the Supreme Court decided the first of two gun cases up this term, ruling 9-0 in United States v.
MONDAY OUTLOOK: Iran’s Deal, FISA’s Lapse, a Spy Chief Hearing and the SCOTUS Endgame
The Senate’s in, the House is out, and the whole week runs on deadlines: a peace deal signing that’s not really a deal, a surveillance law that already expired, and a Supreme Court racing to clear its desk.
Emily Amick and Shannon Watts reflect on resilience, activism, and how we build community
And then read our joint Substack post, The hope you deserve on Inauguration Day, and let us know in the comments what drives you, gives you purpose, and how you’re preparing for the next four years. My upcoming book, Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark Into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age, is now available for preorder! This book is my guide to figuring out what lights you up and will show you how to live on fire every day. Click here to preorder and get locked into some incredible bonuses.
FRIDAY ROUNDUP: AOC's Road Test, the $60 Million Cage Match & Donkeys in Arsenal Socks
Hi friends, This Sunday, on Trump’s 80th birthday, the White House South Lawn becomes a UFC octagon. The event is called UFC Freedom 250, it will cost upwards of $60 million and (allegedly) “significant resources and manpower” of federal agency staff. It’s being framed as the kickoff to America’s 250th birthday celebrations, though it has nothing to do with the nonprofit organizing America’s birthday.
The Platner Tracker, AOC's Long Game, and Hunter's Redemption Tour
We're back with our weekly chat and zero solutions to anything. We get into the Graham Platner mess in Maine (the Blackwater past, the New York Times exposé, the ex-girlfriend allegations), make the case that AOC is quietly building something bigger than anyone realizes, and watch Trump completely lose it on Kristen Welker over the 2020 election. Plus: Hunter Biden's chaotic-good redemption tour, why Wisconsin farmers are getting crushed, and the THC-drink loophole that's about to close.

June 8, 2026 Happy Monday, everyone. I spent the weekend doing house maintenance stuff and so was completely off my phone … and when I got back to it last night, I was greeted with clips from the Tonys! My brain genuinely feels better after a rest from the madness! Here’s what you should expect to read about this week: I keep you updated on the top news of the week every Monday, subscribe now! Today is day 100 of a war Congress never authorized, and it spent the weekend getting worse.

Hi Everyone, I cannot believe it’s June!! On my work calls this week, I feel like everyone was breaking a little; people are really hankering for a summer vacay! I feel like I’ve seen more posts about 90’s summer than usual (analog summer) but that could just be my algorithim. The midterms are going to be absolutely nuts this fall, and are truly an existential threat to our safety and well-being.

I did a lunch talk last week at a law firm, we discussed democracy and getting involved and all that jazz – but when I brought up Belle Burden’s Strangers, the room lit up. People had things to SAY. EVERYONE BUZZED: Did you read the New Yorker piece? A few weeks ago, I wrote a piece called “Strangers Is Book Club Final Boss” where I laid out my ten hottest takes on Belle Burden’s memoir.

Hi Everyone - Back from the living dead (yet again) after I went anemic for a hot minute. Have been getting so many DM’s and texts from friends and followers alike who are sharing similar experiences. And once again, I’m out here being SHOCKED about what women are going through on a daily basis and still … doing all the things. It’s been brutal. Kate Duffy recorded the second episode of our new podcast ACTUALLY, with emily and kate, today!! Find us on Spotify (coming to Apple soon!).

+ Congress is out of session May 27, 2026 Hi friends. It is Wednesday but we’re keeping the graphic, here’s what to keep your eye on for the rest of the week and into next: This Week’s Stories 1. Trump’s Cabinet Meets on Iran Today.

+ a giveaway of KIN Hi All - A lot of big things happened this week: Trump announced a $1.776 billion slush fund to give bribes to loyalists who tried to help him steal the 2020 election. A lawsuit has already been filed to stop it and a bipartisan pair of House members has filed a bill to ban it. “So the nation’s top law enforcement official is asking for a slush fund to pay people who assault cops?” said Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky.

Happy Monday. This Week’s Stories, Ranked: Over 5,000 people rallied in Montgomery on Saturday, with thousands more crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, in the largest voting rights demonstrations since the original 1965 marches. The “All Roads Lead to the South” campaign brought activists, clergy, union organizers, and members of Congress to Alabama’s sacred civil rights ground to protest the wave of redistricting that followed the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in Louisiana v. Callais. Rep.

Hi Friends, —> I have some positive political thoughts to share in this one!!! I write to you from a bar in the Bahamas, where I’m on a very unsuccessful (so far) tech detox to alleviate the doom spiral I’ve been finding myself in recently. Unfortunately, my work schedule was derailed this week after (a) Apple broke my phone when changing the battery and (b) I almost got scammed at the dentist when he insisted on Invisalign instead of fixing a chipped tooth because AI said I “needed” it.

This morning I was on an episode of NPR’s ON POINT (1 hour of live radio!) where I talked about the Democrats’ content problem, what conservatives have been up to and what can be done about it. Find the transcript here, or lisen on Apple or Spotify. I hope you like it! 1.

Hi friends, Happy Mother’s Day weekend to every single person reading this who has mothered someone, something, or themselves. Personally, I’m not a mother to humans, and my mother is dead, so it’s not the holiday for me. But the issue of motherhood is so integral to the fabric of my life, to my version of womanhood and to the change I hope to see in the world.

I recently sat down with Alex Wagner for a Substack Live to talk about the Michigan Democratic Senate primary, why the midterms matter for reproductive rights, and whether AI is the sleeper issue of 2026. Alex also announced a Michigan Dem Senate candidate forum on behalf of Crooked Media (which I will be attending!!), and we dug into the dynamics shaping one of the most consequential races in the country. Here’s an edited transcript of some highlights from our conversation.

Hi friends, Happy Monday. I’m trying a new thing to help you cut through the noise and tell you what to actually watch this week, the deadlines, the hearings, and the decisions that will shape what we’re all talking about by Friday. Grab your coffee. Let’s go.
Emily in Your Phone with Emily Amick
Hi All - So much has happened this week, the Voting Rights Act was gutted by the Supreme Court setting the stage for gerrymandering wars, and the DHS shutdown ended, giving Democrats a big win - it includes no funding for ICE. The week started with the White House Correspondents Dinner shooting and ended with the war powers clock dinging - theoretically requiring Congress to authorize the Iran War. It’s so so so much HUGE news and it’s all happening all the time.
Emily in Your Phone with Emily Amick
Here’s the big stories you should expect to read about this week: Cole Allen, 31, a California teacher, rushed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton Saturday night with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. He exchanged gunfire with Secret Service and was tackled. One agent was hit in a vest. Trump, Vance, and the first lady were evacuated.
Emily in Your Phone with Emily Amick
Hi friends, On Tuesday night, voters in Virginia passed a redistricting referendum that approved a new congressional map that could give Democrats a path to 10 of Virginia’s 11 House seats in the midterms. The current split is 6-5. And, of course, Republicans have sued, and there will be litigation (I think it will work out), but for me, the hopeful story here is that finally - FINALLY - Democrats played hardball.

When I saw that Lindy West’s book about her experience in polyamory was coming out, I posted on my IG something akin to “oh god please no.” Women’s rights are literally crashing before our eyes. The right’s anti-feminist agenda is a wave building ever more strength. The feminist movement is barely able to hold itself together to fight back. It did not feel like the time to fight about whether her version of polyamory is a feminist act.

Last year, I wrote an article, “The Right’s Newest Trojan Horse: Meet MABA” in which I warned that the newest iteration of MAHA was about to start.

Hi friends, My apologies for not getting a Friday Roundup out the door last week. I tried a new medication (amitriptyline) to manage my ‘ghost GERD’ (laryngeal hypersensitivity) and it made me so drugged out that I was starring in my own version of My Year of Rest and Relaxation. (A great book! I had pizza and everything). So with that, I’m trying a new thing, which is a Monday Outlook (?) where we talk anout the week ahead.
