Midwesterners have a reputation for being unable to accept a compliment. As a proud Michigander, I find this to be true both as someone who gives and receives compliments. Just this week at a chamber board meeting a fellow board member said my outfit was cute. I replied by giving her a play-by-play of the great price point I had purchased each piece at. “Midwest humble” is how that reaction of modesty and deflection of a compliment is sometimes categorized.
