Ohio priest’s impact remembered during Black History Month

Here in Ohio, we are blessed to claim many important figures in Black history as part of our state’s story: from poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar and actor Halle Berry to athletes Jesse Owens and Edwin C. Moses. Black History Month in February gives us the opportunity to reflect on and learn from the lives and contributions of such important figures. For Catholics, a Black Ohioan holds special significance: Father Clarence Joseph Rivers (1931-2004), a priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

ODU observes Black Catholic History Month with lecture, Gospel Mass

In 1990, the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus chose November to observe as Black Catholic History Month. This designation marks November as a time to honor the cultural heritage and contributions of Black Catholics to the Church and society. It is a time to celebrate the “gift of Blackness” to the Church, as Pope Paul VI put it when he visited Kampala, Uganda in 1969.
