A poet, activist, leftist publisher, journalist, and onetime manager of the Detroit protopunk band MC5, Sinclair grew up in a small town near Flint, Michigan, in the 1940s and ’50s. He discovered the Beats as a teenager, although it wasn’t always easy to find their books at the time. “You had to dig, dig, dig” Sinclair, now 82, tells me.
