Why Fire Suppression Persists: Territorial Politics and the Criminalisation of Fire in India's Political Forests
1 Introduction In recent decades, research in fire ecology and indigenous fire knowledge has challenged the anti-fire paradigm in fire management. This work has highlighted the ecological role played by fire in open ecosystems, which are often misrecognised by the state as degraded forests, and its central role in the livelihoods and cultural practices of Indigenous Peoples and local communities (Bond 2019; Bond and Parr 2010; Hoffman et al. 2021; Mistry et al. 2016).
Environmental stress reduces shark residency to coral reefs - Communications Biology
Abstract Coral reef ecosystems are highly threatened and can be extremely sensitive to the effects of climate change. Multiple shark species rely on coral reefs as important habitat and, as such, play a number of significant ecological roles in these ecosystems. How environmental stress impacts routine, site-attached reef shark behavior, remains relatively unexplored.
Productivity declines threaten East African soda lakes and the iconic Lesser Flamingo
Highlights • Lesser Flamingo distributions are determined by lake productivity and water levels • Productivity has declined across East African soda lakes due to rising water levels • Flamingo distributions will likely shift north and south away from the equator • Declines in healthy soda lake ecosystems threaten their unique biodiversity Summary 1 Krienitz L. The Lesser Flamingo. in: Lesser Flamingos.
Flamingos threatened by rising African lake levels
New research led by King’s College London has revealed how the Lesser Flamingo is in danger of being flushed from its historic feeding grounds, with serious consequences for the future of the species. For the first time, satellite earth observation data has been used to study all of the key flamingo feeding lakes in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania over two decades, which identified how rising water levels are reducing the birds’ main food source.

Observing soil moisture from space to understand the earth's climate
King’s shows how understanding of the earth’s climate can be improved through satellite moisture data A satellite soil moisture observation project with the India UK Water Centre (IUKWC), led by Geographers from King’s, has highlighted the huge benefits of satellite soil moisture observations across a range of disciplines. The project explored the applications of satellite soil moisture datasets in the UK and India.
