Mondays are rough enough — but for tens of thousands of New York City-area commuters, this Monday is especially so. About 3,500 workers from the Long Island Rail Road went on strike over the weekend, bringing the nation's largest commuter rail line to a halt. City officials are urging employees to work from home; for those who can't, free shuttle bus service is available. One problem: The buses can handle about 13,000 riders, while the LIRR usually carries nearly 300,000 a day.
