The Ultimate Hot Springs Road Trip
Idaho has plenty to recommend it, but one of its best qualities might just be its abundance of hot springs. Thanks to more than 15,000 years of tectonic plate activity beneath its mountains, the Gem State boasts more hot springs than any other state in the U.S.—that’s more than 130 springs just waiting to be soaked in.

5 of the Best Whitewater Rafting Trips in the Midwest
When most people think about the best whitewater rafting in the U.S. it’s typically the big-water rivers of the West and the creeky warm waters of the Southeast that come to mind. It’s bucket list trips like the Colorado River through Grand Canyon, Idaho’s scenic Salmon River, and the popular Gauley River in West Virginia. Yet, if you’re from the oft-underrated flyover states, you don’t have to go far to find world-class whitewater rafting in the Midwest. Is There Whitewater Rafting in the Midwest?

Published by Valour Consultancy From page 2 of the whitepaper: Countless whitepapers, studies and technical analyses of the connected aircraft have been published in recent years. Dead Reckoning: Learning from Accidents in the Outdoors|Paperback
English 1493052780 It's easier to stay alive if you know what's out there. That's the philosophy behind Dead Reckoning, an honest, unflinching, sometimes-thrilling collection of close calls and catastrophes in the Great Outdoors. Emma Walker's narrative nonfiction covers outdoor activities ranging from hiking to sea kayaking to backcountry skiing, all in accessible, easy-to-understand terms.
Editor’s Comment: Connectivity and Comfort
In 2020, the dialogue around in-flight experience was dominated by the urgent need for safety and security. PPE, air filters, screens, the middle seat debate, new seating concepts… The question on all passengers’ lips was “Is it safe to fly?” and the industry found itself having to fight to get passengers back onboard rather than focus on refining their in-flight experience. Despite the war against COVID-19 being far from over, 2021 has begun with a renewed focus on connectivity and comfort.
These Bears Have a Job, and It's Destroying Coolers
When I was 23, I spent a summer working as a counselor at an overnight camp for eight-to-12-year-olds near the central mountain town of Genesee, Colorado. After a stern talking-to about what might happen if anyone went to bed with a snack in their sleeping bags—bears, people!—we’d zip the kids into their tents for the night, lock up the cabin containing our kitchen, and try to catch a few hours of sleep.

Guided River Trips Aren't Just for Newbies
I’ve wanted to do a Grand Canyon rafting trip for as long as I can remember. A few years ago, I lent my parents my battered copy of The Emerald Mile, Kevin Fedarko’s brilliant telling of the Colorado River’s journey through the Grand Canyon. In it, Fedarko winds his way through the history of the Glen Canyon Dam and its inextricable link to the record-setting 1983 speed run through the canyon in the wooden dory that lent its name to the book.
9 Easy-to-Epic Microadventures Near Sacramento
There are a million and one reasons why we love adventure. That rewarding flip of our stomachs as we punch through a hole in a raft or kayak on a whitewater trip. The satisfying vertigo we feel when we’re on an exposed rock face. The burn in our quads and shoulders as we trek through pristine wilderness with everything we need to survive strapped to our backs. The return to civilization with a slowly-smoldering ember of content burning in our hearts.
The Best of Moab if You Only Have a Week

Guide to Climbing Gyms in Boulder
Boulder is a training ground for countless world-class athletes, and it’s not hard to see why. The city is at the foot of the famous Flatirons, and is just a stone’s throw from iconic locations like Eldo, Boulder Canyon, and Lumpy Ridge, among others. As the days get colder and snowier, though, Boulder climbers will be spending less time training outside and more time pulling plastic. Fortunately, the People’s Republic has facilities for climbers of all interests and abilities.
The Best Half-Day Hikes Near Estes Park
Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are known for their high elevation and rugged terrain, and there’s plenty of both near Estes Park. But don’t be intimidated—despite being 7,500 feet above sea level, the Estes Park area is home to plenty of approachable hiking trails that don’t necessarily require a full day of exertion. If you’re heading out for a hike in the Rockies, you’ll want to get an early start to miss the thunderstorms that roll in like clockwork most summer afternoons.

Great Whites and Great Waves: A Surf Road Trip from Seattle to San Francisco
Less than a week before tornadoes struck Manzanita, I stood atop a band of cliffs along the Oregon coast and watched heavy sets sweep in from the horizon. Sunlight flickered off deep blue waves; the wind was gentle, fog minimal. Though the vista was undeniably idyllic, the sea was far from calm. Exposed, rugged, and breathtaking, Oregon gets battered constantly by swell from the Pacific, and its headlands seem as though they’re on the verge of crumbling into the sea at any minute.
7 Climbers Share Their Tips for Conquering Fear
Smart ways to strengthen your mental game A climber topping out her route at the 2019 Women's Climbing Fest (Photo: Vikki Glinksii) As a professional athlete who’s been climbing for more than 20 years, I know how tough it can be to manage fear when you’re on a wall. How to train your brain was a main focus of the Women’s Climbing Fest (WCF) in late March this year. “Start a journey with mental training,” said pro climber Hazel Findlay.
Call of the Wild
Wikimedia Commons When George Dirth was in elementary school, his mother, Lisa, picked him up early from school on Friday afternoons. They’d head to the tiny ski hill near their New Hampshire home, where George would take a lesson and, if he had his way, snowboard until the lifts stopped running. One afternoon, Lisa recalls, lessons were cancelled thanks to frigid temperatures — it was 20 degrees below zero. Lisa skied one run, got cold, and headed into the lodge.

A Women's Climbing Festival That's Open to All Genders
Tickets to the 2017 Women’s Climbing Festival (WCF) in Bishop, California, sold out in a minute. Literally—one minute. Soon the waitlist to register for the weekend event, open to women-identified and non-binary people, had over 800 names. That’s how Shelma Jun knew she needed to add another event. The following year, Jun, who founded the women’s climbing platform Flash Foxy (which runs the event) in 2014, organized a second weekend in Chattanooga, Tennessee. That one sold out, too.
10 Best Basecamps for Winter Adventure in Wyoming
In the Bighorns 5. Eaton’s Ranch Northern Wyoming’s craggy Bighorn Mountains are a must-visit for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The robust Nordic trail system is far enough off the beaten path that it’s still relatively uncrowded, which means you’ll likely get to experience some of Wyoming’s best skinny ski terrain, like the Cutler Cross-Country Ski Trail or the Sibley Lake Trails, without having to share.
Buying local - Boulder Weekly
Based in San Luis Valley, Haefeli Honey, like many small beekeeping operations, has done its best to alleviate a problem over which it has little control. John Haefeli Southern Colorado’s San Luis Valley is as rugged as it gets. It’s bordered by the Sangre de Cristo and the San Juan mountains; anywhere that’s not covered in peaks or sand is used for agriculture. It’s a far cry from Rising Sun, Indiana, where Laura Haefeli grew up.
Healing in the national parks
Courtesy of the Healing NET Foundation Gil Schaenzle is tough. It’s not her demeanor; she laughs easily and speaks warmly about her family. But this is a woman who once broke her ankle seven miles into a half-marathon in Yuma, Arizona, hobbled to an aid station, fashioned herself a duct-tape splint, and finished the race.
The Other Badlands: A Tour of American Badlands Beyond South Dakota
North America doesn’t have a monopoly on badlands, but it lays claim to the best-known examples and also generated the name of this singularly rough, moonscape terrain.
How to Tackle a Long-Distance Hike in Winter
Hiking the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail, which begins on Georgia’s Springer Mountain and runs all the way north to Mount Katahdin in Maine, is certainly a hardcore adventure. But making it through the 100-Mile Wilderness in Maine—generally considered the wildest, most remote section—earns another level of bragging rights.
The Rockies vs. the Northeast: Who has the Best Fall Colors (and Where to Find Them)?
It’s that bittersweet time of year: There’s a new crispness in the air, pumpkin spice everything is back on the menu, and, most importantly, the leaves have begun to turn. All that means summer is just about over, but there’s a definite upside—it’s leaf-peeping season all over the United States. Of course, the onset of autumn brings up some fairly heated discussions about where, exactly, you can find the absolute best fall foliage.
What is CBD — and should I be using it? - Boulder Weekly
From the front window of Runners High in Golden, Colorado, shoppers can see Lookout Mountain and the iconic “M” on Mount Zion. The tiny specialty retail shop is a five-minute run from the trailhead for lungbuster Nightbird Gulch. But the views and the access aren’t the only things bringing customers into the shop these days — they’re stopping by to pick up topical cannabidiol, or CBD. “We’re selling out of it constantly,” says co-owner Deb Spence.
How to Protect Yourself from the Elements on Your Next Hike
Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, the desert, or anywhere in between, preparation for the natural elements is a big part of planning any outdoor trip. Exposure on a hike can mean many different things, none of them good: lack of shade or shelter, prolonged time spent at altitude or in extreme temperatures, natural obstacles, and biting or stinging insects. They can vary from mild annoyances to possibly life-threatening injuries—and all should be taken seriously.
8 Essential Bike Repair Skills You Need to Know
I’ve been riding bikes for about 20 years. I’ve ridden my road bike 100 miles in a day, bike-packed to remote campsites on a touring bike, and tackled all manner of singletrack (including some that was well over my head). In other words, I’ve spent a lot of time in the saddle. But for most of it, I kept a deep, dark secret. Most of the time, I didn’t think about it.
Pro Tips for Pulling Off the Perfect Adult Camping Trip with Friends
Remember those beloved childhood camping trips? The ones where you’d hike and fish all day, then stay up late giggling and telling ghost stories around the campfire? For lots of outdoorsy types, those are among your most cherished memories, but they are long gone. But they don’t have to be relegated to old photo albums—now that you’re an adult, you can recreate those memorable camping trips.
Del Norte is Colorado’s semi-secret gem
Dirt Rag Contributor — July 27, 2018 By Emma Walker Photo by Bix Firer. In Del Norte, it’s still possible to have the trail to yourself on a sunny Saturday. If you’re coming from the Front Range, Del Norte is on the way to big-name destinations—Wolf Creek, Pagosa Springs, Durango—but blink, and you might miss it. It was hard to believe, as I circled my truck around the block to pull in at the historic Windsor Hotel, that this was the place I’d been hearing so much about.
The Town of Dillon's Best Family Summer Activities
By Emma Walker for RootsRated Media in partnership with Town of Dillon Summit County, Colorado, has plenty of hidden gems, but its crown jewel is in plain sight: At more than 3,000 acres and with nearly 30 miles of shoreline, Lake Dillon regularly causes jaws to drop as drivers crest I-70 before descending to Exit 205. The scenic mountain town of Dillon takes full advantage of the enormous alpine lake, providing access to watersports and a laid-back waterfront vibe that’s unique in the state.
What Can We Learn from Avalanches?
On November 28, 2001, two experienced backcountry skiers left Eldora Mountain Resort, a small ski area outside Nederland, Colorado. Joe Despres, 29, and Peter Vaughn, 47, skinned up the Jenny Creek Trail to Yankee Doodle Lake, on the east side of Rollins Pass, to take advantage of the new snow after a dismal early season. This was their third outing in as many days; they knew the conditions and carried avalanche rescue equipment—beacons, probes, and shovels.
Make Swat Weird Again: wild traditions from Swarthmore’s past and present
Picking up a copy of the Phoenix from April 2, 1971, I spy a front page headline: “S’more Senior Arrested On Possession Charges in Media Narcotics Raid.” It reads that “a Swarthmore student is being held for grand jury” for what was described as the “biggest quantity of LSD ever confiscated in the borough” by the “Delaware County Daily Times”, coming in with a whopping 2,000 tabs of LSD and small quantities of marijuana, hash, and barbiturates (an old-fashioned strong sedative).
The outdoor industry (still) has a diversity problem
Whether you’re checking out an advertisement for an outdoor retailer or you're out on a trail yourself, chances are the people you encounter reflect that statistic: white, fit, and seemingly "outdoorsy" by nature. Rarely are black, brown or even queer people seen, and some people in the outdoors industry think it’s time we change that.
Where to Go Camping Under the Stars in and Around Moab
The Moab area is an adventure-lover’s playground by day, but it’s pretty great once the sun sets, too. It’s just 30 miles from Canyonlands National Park, a designated International Dark Sky Park, so you know there’s solid stargazing. The beauty of camping in and around Moab is that many sites are at or near trailheads, so you can get an early start to beat the heat or keep playing until dusk.
15 things you'll only know if you're a complete and utter pushover
Despite the fact you have the 'elbows out, eyes forward' commuting pose completely nailed (and were definitely first on the platform), everyone else manages to beat you onto the train. Every. Single. Time. But at least the fact you're always late for work gives you the much-needed edge you lack as a pushover. 2. "No problem" is your most used phrase Uttered each and every time you agree to yet another favour. Regardless of whether you actually want to do it or not. 3.
Ready for the Best California Rafting Season in 5 Years?
2016 California Rafting Outlook Last Updated May 11, 2016 It’s been five years since we’ve seen a solid snowpack in California and there has been any kind of buzz about whitewater rafting. But based on the most recent snow survey, and just one year after the driest winter ever recorded in California history, things are definitely looking up. This year’s April 1 surveys reported near normal snowpack totals in the Northern and Central Sierra.
