EATON — Eaton Community Schools has announced its policy for free and reduced-price meals or free milk for students who are unable to pay the full price of meals or milk during the 2026-27 school year. The policy applies to meals or milk served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs, After School Care Snack Program or Special Milk Program. Copies of the policy are available for review by interested parties at each school office and the district’s central office.

My two youngest sons and I spent the first week in August at the Pickin’ in Parsons Music Festival in Parsons, West Virginia. It’s hard to believe this makes the sixth year we’ve been to the festival. We saw a gob of old friends, made some new friends, and missed some folks that we didn’t see this time around. I made a list of the occupations of some of the folks we have met there. Seeing how most of them are already retired, I guess I should say their occupations back in the day.

PREBLE COUNTY — Benjamin Hanby, whose musical legacy includes one of America’s most recognizable Christmas songs as well as a powerful anti-slavery ballad, has been selected as one of six 2026 inductees into the Preble County Historical Society’s Sara Swartsel Hall of Honor. Hanby, who spent a portion of his life in New Paris, is perhaps best known locally as the composer of “Up on the Housetop,” the Christmas song he wrote while living in the Preble County community.

HD Media acquires The Register-Herald EATON — A new owner with ties to the Midwest has purchased The Register-Herald and its corporate owner. HD Media LLC, a media company based in Charleston, West Virginia, purchased AIM Media Midwest and AIM Media Indiana, the owners of The Register-Herald along with 18 other publications in Ohio and six in Indiana, respectively. The terms of sale weren’t disclosed. The change in ownership, announced in a press release Wednesday, Aug. 19 will take effect Sept. 1.

RICHMOND, INDIANA — National Trail placed fifth overall to lead three Preble County teams competing in the Blazer Golf Invitational on Friday, Aug. 7, at Richmond Elks Country Club. The Blazers finished with a team score of 339 in the 13-team field, while Preble Shawnee placed seventh with a 359 and Eaton finished 10th with a 370. Valley View captured the team championship with a 307, edging Talawanda by three strokes. Talawanda finished at 310, while Beavercreek was third with a 321.

Editor: To honor America’s 250th birthday, the Ohio House of Representatives passed HB 492 which will push the State of Ohio ever closer to a police state. HB 492 becomes law in October of this year and requires all passengers in a vehicle that is stopped by the police to provide identification. HB 492 is a direct violation of the 4th Amendment to our Constitution.

Preble County grand jury returns indictments; Heggs formally charged
EATON — A Preble County grand jury returned 14 indictments during its Monday, Aug. 3, session, including charges ranging from drug offenses and weapons violations to assault, arson and theft. Among those indicted was Benjamin Henry Heggs, 26, of Eaton, who faces two counts of arson, each with six weapon forfeiture specifications, along with aggravated possession of drugs, possessing criminal tools, attempted cruelty to animals, criminal damaging or endangering and criminal trespass.

NWS confirms EF1 tornado struck northwest of Eaton
EATON — The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down northwest of Eaton during severe storms Saturday evening, Aug. 1, producing peak winds of approximately 100 mph and damaging homes, barns and crops along Surface Road. According to the NWS storm survey, the tornado touched down at approximately 7:58 p.m. about 4 miles northwest of Eaton and remained on the ground for about four minutes before lifting at 8:02 p.m. roughly 3 miles north-northwest of the city.
