The Importance of the Wardroom Ashore

Almost any Coast Guard ship of sufficient size has a chiefs’ mess and a wardroom. For officers, the ship’s wardroom is a proud tradition afloat. It is not just a space for communal meals, but also a living group that works together underway—a place where officers mentor and help one another. Many ashore units also have a chiefs’ mess. But the wardroom, both as a place and a fraternal organization, is often neglected on land. My first two units made attempts to ensure conviviality.
