In June 2024, a mayday call came over Maritime 16, the international distress frequency at sea. Reports flowed through the tactical flag command center (TFCC) on board the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). The Liberian-flagged merchant vessel Tutor was reporting an explosion, possibly caused by an unmanned surface vessel attack. A crewmember had been killed and 21 others were stuck on board the stricken vessel, which was taking on water.

Whether you are looking for lost keys or conducting search and rescue (SAR) to find a lost person, you mostly do it the same way your ancestors did—visually. It is effective, but meaningful improvements and adjuncts are available. Unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) offer a safe and cost-effective way to increase search effectiveness. More important, they can do so without the large manpower and financial burdens associated with crewed helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.
