On August 11, as temperatures soared above 40 degree Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), Gheorghe Vranciu was on a ten-hour shift picking fruit near Lleida, Catalonia. By 2 p.m., the sixty-one-year-old Romanian had become overwhelmed by the heat — and asked to go home. “[His supervisor’s] response was that he was just drunk, even though my father didn’t drink alcohol,” his son Ovidio told local media.

Spain Is Right to Reject Increased Military Spending

On Thursday, Spain’s center-left prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, broke ranks with other NATO leaders as he refused to commit to spending 5 percent of GDP on defense. Since taking office in January, Donald Trump has demanded a massive increase from the current 2 percent spending target, as part of his administration’s plans to scale back the US military presence in Europe. For many member states, the 5 percent pledge is about keeping Trump onside after months of unprecedented diplomatic upheaval.

The Border Graves Investigation was published in over 40 stories in 22 outlets in 9 countries and 8 languages, and its investigative findings were re-reported widely. The investigation has been published in print, digital, radio, video, and podcast forms and drew attention to a crisis of unmarked graves proliferating on Europe’s borders at a scale unprecedented outside of war. The Border Graves Investigation team consists of eight journalists, working across Europe’s southern and eastern borders, coming together for eight months under cross-border investigative journalism grants from IJ4EU and JournalismFund.
