In the run-up to its theatrical release, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey became embroiled in online polemics after Elon Musk attacked the movie’s supposed “woke” casting. Yet beyond this contrived spectacle lies a far more important criticism to be made of the filmmakers: their decision to shoot part of the movie in Africa’s last colony, Western Sahara. Enjoying generous subsidies from the Moroccan state, they lent legitimacy to its illegal occupation regime.

On August 11, as temperatures soared above 40 degree Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), Gheorghe Vranciu was on a ten-hour shift picking fruit near Lleida, Catalonia. By 2 p.m., the sixty-one-year-old Romanian had become overwhelmed by the heat — and asked to go home. “[His supervisor’s] response was that he was just drunk, even though my father didn’t drink alcohol,” his son Ovidio told local media.

The Border Graves Investigation was published in over 40 stories in 22 outlets in 9 countries and 8 languages, and its investigative findings were re-reported widely. The investigation has been published in print, digital, radio, video, and podcast forms and drew attention to a crisis of unmarked graves proliferating on Europe’s borders at a scale unprecedented outside of war. The Border Graves Investigation team consists of eight journalists, working across Europe’s southern and eastern borders, coming together for eight months under cross-border investigative journalism grants from IJ4EU and JournalismFund.
