Why Was the God of the Old Testament So Violent?
Wes Craven, the famous writer and director of the Scream franchise, could have scripted several of the gruesome human catastrophes in the Old Testament. Gut-wrenching Bible stories of God killing children, raining burning sulfur, and genocide have left many Christians dazed and confused about the Bible. To the atheist, these verses prove that the biblical God is cruel, and anyone who believes in him is, at best, brainwashed. Skepticism is understandable.
The RELEVANT Guide to Being Single During the Holidays
“What happened to the time?” I ask myself. It seems like only yesterday I was tight-rolling my jeans in junior high and nursing a crush on my classmate, Tiffany. Somewhere I blinked, and two decades later, I remain unmarried. Christmastime can easily stir up discontent and insecurity in those of us who are single. As families gather during this season, they remind us of the lack of our spouse and children.
Moving on From a Mistake Doesn't Have to be Hard
In the classic ’80s movie Back to the Future, Marty McFly journeys back in time to fix the mistakes of his dysfunctional family. Spoiler alert: He succeeds just in the nick of time with the help of Christopher Lloyd and Hollywood’s all-time coolest time-traveling DeLorean. The franchise is built on a simple idea: Wouldn’t it be nice to change the past? Unfortunately, there is no DeLorean that can alter the painful events that occurred a decade, a year or even a moment ago.
Why Is Christian Dating So Hard?
My unmarried roommate Charlie was climbing into his late thirties when a woman invited him to join her at a wedding reception. Maybe not a terrible first date? I thought. It’s a bit intense but fair enough. Charlie accepted and seemed to have a good time. The day after their wedding date – I mean, date-at-a-wedding – the woman appeared on a front porch with a wrapped present for Charlie. Isn’t that sweet? He opened it to find a framed picture of them at the wedding.
4 Pernicious Myths of Christian Dating
Eric Demeter Author 2021 2 Nov I've circled the Christian and non-Christian dating block more times than I'd like to admit. I was twenty-one before I became a follower of Christ and attended church regularly. Though Christian dating was new to me, I began noticing several pernicious myths that needed to be dispelled. Here are four of these myths and the truth that will help you build healthier relationships.

Four Pieces of Dating Advice That Are Actually Helpful
As I’ve noted before, if you’re single, you’ve most likely received your fair share of dating advice—both helpful and extremely unhelpful. It’s amazing, with how much dating advice is out there, how little of it is actually helpful. “If it’s supposed to happen, it will happen.” “Plenty of fish in the sea.” It’s not that advice like this is necessarily bad, but you couldn’t call it helpful.

Purity is More than Debating Yoga Pants
Eric Demeter Author 2017 23 Nov The dreaded teenage sex-talk arrived from my mother. I was a teenager and imprisoned in her Audi as she drove. As I was held against my will, she blurted, “Keep it in your pants and don’t impregnate anyone.” Subtle, I thought. At least the one-way conversation was laconic and practical. And it was relevant. I was beginning my first year at a secular university soon thereafter. But mostly, it was traumatizing.
Why Gratitude Is a Spiritual Discipline | RELEVANT Magazine
It’s almost unbelievable that Jesus heals 10 lepers in Luke 17 simultaneously. Without fanfare, He simply commands the motley crew, “Go, show yourselves to the priest.” They exit stage-left and their skin is restored. Jesus certainly missed an opportunity there to make a big, impressive scene. The Lord was never concerned with aggrandizement. What was unbelievable to Him, however, was the lack of thankfulness from the former lepers. Only one makes a U-turn to thank Him for His tremendous miracle.
Why Is Christian Dating So Weird?
Christian dating can be awkward and downright weird sometimes. But let’s be fair. All dating is awkward—for those inside and outside the church. How could it not be? On a first date, you stare at each other wearing the I-wonder-if-this-will-go-anywhere glasses. Unanswered questions swirl around in your mind causing anxiety. The stress makes communication like swimming through gravel. Does he like me? Do I like her? Will she contact me to go out again? Am I attracted to him?

The Prosperity Gospel Creates Poor Christians
Editor’s note: This piece first ran in 2015. We are posting again in light of Benny Hinn’s recent comments indicating that he is now rejecting prosperity theology. He recently told viewers, “I don’t want to get to heaven and be rebuked. I think it’s time we say it like its: The Gospel is not for sale.” Earlier this year, the Internet erupted over the fact that televangelist Creflo Dollar was raising funds to buy a $65 million private jet.
Andy Stanley Explains Why He's Stopped Saying 'The Bible Says ...'
Pastor Andy Stanley recently told blogger and podcaster Michael Brown why he’s stopped using the terminology “The Bible says …” On an episode of Brown’s Line of Fire podcast, the megachurch leader explained: Once upon a time that was very effective in our country. Those days are long gone. But unfortunately, church leaders still want to leverage “the Bible says,” which is great for people who take the Bible seriously. [That’s] not my audience.
Chad Veach Has an Important Reminder About Speaking Up
Author and Zoe Church pastor Chad Veach recently tweeted a sermon clip with an important reminder about engaging conflict. “You have the ability to bring peace to chaotic situations,” he says. He goes on to use an example from the life of David of what kind of consequences can follow a failure to speak up in the face of an injustice. Amen.

Sermon of the Week: Christine Caine Urges Us to 'Get Off the Mat'
In a recent sermon at Bethel Conference, evangelist and activist Christine Caine delivered a stirring message of resilient hope titled “Get Off the Mat.” The gist is that people can bounce back from life’s most devastating trials. The question is, as Jesus asked the lame man at the pool of Bethesda—which she used as her text—do you want to let go of your brokenness and accept the responsibility that comes with being made whole?
Group of SWBTS's Top Donors Seeks Investigation Into Paige Patterson's Termination
When Paige Patterson was finally terminated at the end of May after a few previous half-measures and statements, it seemed to be fairly cut and dry. However, according to the Christian Post, 17 of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s biggest donors have sent a letter to the chair of the board of trustees, threatening to withhold their donations if “serious wrongs” aren’t “righted,” referring to Patterson’s termination.
Why Your Prayers Aren't 'Working'
I wish I could say that my prayer life is one defined by consistent authenticity and audacious faith. But if I’m being honest … Prayer is one of the places I struggle the most in my walk with God. I struggle with slowing down long enough to pray. I struggle with finding a quiet place and getting alone. I struggle with praying big prayers with big faith. I struggle with being consistent and fervent with my prayers.
3 Dating Mistakes Christians Need to Avoid
Believe or not, dating is like doing squats. Let me explain. For the most part, I am free—just as you are—to try any type of squat. There is no wrong kind of squat because all of them are beneficial in their own way. True for all squats, however, is that there is a wrong way to perform them. If I lift the weight (or my body) using my lower back muscles instead of my quadriceps, I could easily damage my body. In this light, dating has the same diversity and the same warning as squats.
Can Patriotism Become Idolatry?
The church I grew up in has these gorgeous stained glass windows that line every wall of the sanctuary. Rain or shine, light explodes through them every Sunday morning, bathing the faithful in a kaleidoscope of color. But as beautiful as they are, what I love most about them is the story they tell.
Action or Inaction: What Will Your Legacy Be? - OnFaith
On January 25, 1919, a group of young men sailed from New York to Beirut, Lebanon on a ship called Pensacola. Following the devastating Armenian genocide (1915-1918), these young men left their homes to live and work among the refugees and displaced people of Lebanon and Syria. Among them was a man named Ezra Deter. A conscientious objector to World War I, Ezra dedicated many years of his life to the refugees of modern day Lebanon and Syria.
Don’t Be Paralyzed By Indecision
In high school I wanted to flirt with a group of cute cheerleaders. But to infiltrate the sea of pompoms I needed to traverse a low hanging rope. It dangled in front of me, and under normal circumstances, seemed simple enough to overcome. “Should I jump over the rope or simply step over it?” I asked myself. Inevitably, I didn’t choose. Without warning, my legs got tangled up and SMACK! I ate the ground hard—a high schooler’s worst nightmare! My indecision was embarrassing and certainly humorous.
