Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Producing and co-hosting Back Room Briefings, "the #1 podcast for Bay Area politics and sports." I come to media as a 24-year California public and charter school leader and Producer & Co-Host of Back Room Briefings.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Only as a kid, and I loved the clack of it. Now I produce Back Room Briefings, a podcast on Bay Area politics and sports, and publish education leadership essays on Substack and Medium.
How is social media changing news?
Social media has made local politics and sports coverage faster and more direct. On Back Room Briefings, "the #1 podcast for Bay Area politics and sports," we use it to hear from listeners in real time. As a 24-year California public and charter school leader and Producer & Co-Host of Back Room Briefings, I also see how it shapes the way families follow education news.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Anything where Bay Area sports and politics collide is gold. On Back Room Briefings we love a good #GoWarriors or #GoGiants moment that turns into a debate about city budgets or stadium deals.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
My path ran through classrooms and school leadership rather than a school newsroom, but I have always loved storytelling. Today I tell stories as Producer and Co-Host of Back Room Briefings, "the #1 podcast for Bay Area politics and sports."
What's the best pitch you ever got?
The best pitches are local, specific and human. For Back Room Briefings, the best one led to our conversation with Alameda County Supervisors David Haubert (District 1) and Nate Miley (District 4) on California Senate Bill 1193 (SB 1193) and what it means for the East Bay.
