Justice For Cyrus Carmack-Belton
A South Carolina jury found gas station owner Rick Chow not guilty in the murder of a 14-year-old Black teenager, Cyrus Carmack-Belton. Chow suspected Cyrus of stealing four bottles of water and chased him the length of a football field before shooting him in the back. Security camera recordings show Chow and his son following Cyrus around the store, baselessly suspecting that he would steal something.
No Jim Crow 2.0: Build A New Civil Rights Movement
The Supreme Court’s decision to gut the Voting Rights Act (VRA) has unleashed a torrent of racist voter suppression efforts in state after state. Republicans across the South are now racing to disenfranchise millions of Black voters, ahead of the midterm elections. Tennessee has already eliminated its only majority-Black district, with Alabama and Louisiana likely to slash more soon.
Crisis In Mali Escalates: Imperialism To Blame
On April 25, Mali’s brutal civil war escalated. Thousands of Al-Qaeda and Tuareg separatist forces launched coordinated attacks across the country. Russian and Malian forces fled in the hundreds, leaving civilians defenseless. Defense Minister Sadio Camara was killed, thousands of Malian civilians were displaced, and fear spread across the country. The capital, Bamako, is now under siege with food, gas, and other essential commodities being blocked from entering the city.
Supreme Court Guts The Voting Rights Act
The Supreme Court has destroyed what was left of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965. In a 6-3 conservative majority decision, Louisiana’s proposed congressional map including a second majority-Black district was ruled unconstitutional, described as “racial gerrymandering,” thereby gutting Section 2 of the VRA.
Fight Trump’s Attacks On Voting Rights
The midterms may seem far off, but Trump is already launching a full-scale assault on voting rights for working people. His regime is putting forward ridiculous voter suppression legislation, demanding increased gerrymandering in key states, and threatening to deploy ICE agents to polling stations. With increasingly low approval ratings and the threat of a “blue wave,” the Trump regime is gearing up to say the elections will be rigged.

KEEP HOPE ALIVE-Jesse Jackson & Black Freedom
Jesse Jackson has passed away at the age of 84. Jackson was a pioneer in the struggle for Black liberation and a towering figure in the Civil Rights Movement. Jackson was a crucial leader in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and other gigantic fighters for justice. He led boycotts, sit-ins, and marches, advocating not just for the elimination of Jim/Jane Crow, but for raising wages and providing housing for working people.
Black History Month: Fight Trump’s Counter-Revolution
One year of Trump 2.0 has been disastrous for working people. ICE is invading working-class communities and ripping families apart. Unemployment is increasing, prices are skyrocketing, and the mega-rich continue to rake in billions in profits. Landmark civil rights legislation, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965, is being slashed to bits. Repealing Roe v.
You’re Not Stupid-The Economy Sucks
Donald Trump called the affordability crisis a “con job” and a “hoax,” but working people nationwide beg to differ. Most Americans cannot afford a $500 emergency and are living paycheck to paycheck. Basic living necessities are increasingly out of reach for working families.
Five Years Since George Floyd’s Murder: Rodney Hinton and the Need for Mass Anti-Racist Struggle
Rodney Hinton, a Black father, killed a Cinincatti police officer after watching the body cam footage of his son’s brutal death. After witnessing his son get killed as he ran from police officers, Rodney got into his truck and intentionally ran over a cop who was directing traffic. Police officers packed Rodney’s bail hearing to intimidate him and forced his family to wait outside of the hearing.
CALA-Bash to include some twists
The Claflin Arts & Letters Annual Bash is a yearly event sponsored by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. (Photo via Dr. Luis Almeida) CALA-Bash returns to Claflin University in April with a “few added twists.” Panther reporters spoke with CALA-Bash chairs Dr. Eric Crawford, interim chair of the Department of Music, and Cornelius Cakely, chair of the Department of Art, to learn more about CALA-Bash activities from April 7-13.
Black Liberation Means Socialist Revolution
Black History Month is different this year. Trump’s rants about “diversity hires” and vision of a “color-blind” America are attacks on Black workers, 1 of 5 of whom work in the public sector. Schools are being threatened with defunding if they educate children about the reality of racial oppression of Black people or support transgender students.
Alarm Spreads at Carbon Sinks Crisis
This autumn’s devastating torrential rains in Spain, hurricanes in the Caribbean Sea and typhoons in Southeast Asia are a warning of the apocalyptic future that looms unless the world can quickly halt global warming. The devastation is a direct consequence of 2023 and 2024 being the hottest years on record, with global temperatures peaking at 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and the Paris Agreement targets evaporating as fast as carbon dioxide emissions have increased.
On Splits, Big and Little: Towards an Intensive Model of Media and Mediation
1. Introduction There is a sad story here, one about lost connections, frayed feelings, and split families. Yet it begins in a more mundane place—the ubiquity of media. The devices, institutions, and platforms designated with the term “media” are pervasive, and, concomitantly, the study of media has proliferated into numerous disciplines and subfields—media studies, media effects, media design, media ecology, media theory, mass media, new media, and digital media.
Capitalism Can’t Bring Lasting Peace To Gaza
Nine months after the start of the Israeli military’s genocidal assault on Gaza, Palestinian families are still being torn asunder by the relentless onslaught of Israeli bombs and missiles, largely supplied by the US government. The horror in Gaza continues to deepen with the growing threat of mass hunger and starvation. Locked in an open-air prison turned into a horrific war zone, more and more Palestinians are relying on crowdfunding to reach food or be able to escape the Strip.
Workers And Youth Fight To Stop Atlanta’s Proposed ‘Cop City’
For months, Atlanta’s political establishment has been trying to sell to the public its plan to establish a massive $90 million dollar training facility for police officers, known as “Cop City.” Building Cop City will cut down some of the last native forests in Atlanta, and bulldoze a predominately Black working-class neighborhood. This heinous plan has inspired a persistent struggle from working people and youth against the building of the facility.
Why the Black Freedom Movement Needs Socialist Leadership
By Eric Jenkins and Ryan Watson, Socialist Alternative Black Caucus. The 1960s was an epoch of mass struggle of the working class and oppressed communities around the world. The future of American capitalism was rattled by the massive social movements of the Black working class at the height of the Civil Rights movement and Black Power. Young Black people en masse were organizing against the Jim/Jane Crow social order in the heart of the South and in the ghettos of the North.
A systematic review of the 60 year literature: Effects of outreach programs in supporting historically marginalized and first-generation, low-income students in healthcare education
1. Challenges in design We considered studies on healthcare education outreach programs to be adequately designed if there was an explicit theoretical framework section and the study goals could be supported by the measured outcomes. Complete theoretical framework sections contained hypotheses/research questions which drew from either literature, prior research performed, or an existing model.
Five Reasons to Choose an Insulated Composite Backup Wall System
A pharmaceutical research center in an office park, a new middle school in a growing town, or a performing arts center in a big city. When designing an architectural building facade, the options are endless for a protective and aesthetic solution. But not all systems deliver the same performance and long-term durability provided by an insulated composite backup panel.

Want to be Healthier, Wealthier, and Wise? Live in a Blue State
Yesterday, Trump tweeted a meme blaming Nancy Pelosi for homelessness in her district. It’s a trope I’ve heard a lot recently from the right — the idea that because most cities are run by Democrats, and cities have crime and homelessness problems, this proves the failure of Democratic policies. It’s very faulty logic, for at least two reasons. First, cities will always face problems of affordable housing, homelessness, and crime that rural areas will not due to the density of the populations.
Philadelphia may breathe a sigh of post-election relief, but we’re still barely surviving | Opinion
The election is now over, and a transition of power upon us — but many realities of life in Philadelphia still loom over our heads. The poorest big city in America, Philadelphia lacks a public hospital. We lack the school infrastructure necessary to safely educate our children. We lack living-wage jobs, exacerbated by our minimum wage still being just $7.25 per hour. And the lack of continued stimulus funding during the pandemic and gutting of extended unemployment has workers teetering on the edge.
City Council’s budget tweaks fall short | Opinion
The late evening of June 17 was a self-congratulatory one for Philadelphia City Council. “This is a nontraditional hour for us to be taking care of the people’s business,” Council President Darrell L.

Eric S. Jenkins is an associate communication professor at the University of Cincinnati and founder of the #OneHourAWeek organization. I am one of many Americans who were moved by the past few elections to get more involved in their democracy. Thousands of people who often watched from the sidelines are now organizing groups, calling representatives, and demanding accountability from their government. For anyone who believes in democracy as government by the people, it is truly inspiring.
