“I’m fine,” was my father’s go-to response when someone asked if he needed anything during his final months. A stoic man whose vast intelligence earned admiration from many, including myself. There were times when I tried to impress him with my vocabulary and film criticism, only to feel inadequate by comparison. He also struggled with feeling unworthy or not good enough.
