Feeder cattle supplies visibly tightening, sending ripples through the markets
Fed cattle The coldest temperatures of the winter – and possibly several winters in some cases – descended on Cow Country USA during the week of Christmas, threatening the welfare of livestock across the region. By Pipestone County Star | on July 06, 2026 By Contributor | on July 06, 2026 When operating a small farm, growers aren’t just the producers; they are the pickers, the packers, the accountants, and the marketing strategists. By the time they harvest, clean and bundle their crops, the chore of selling them can feel like a breaking point. That’s why Minnesota farmers, like Erik Heimark, are experimenting with farmstands to market produce.
Preparing pastures key to making a profit
Summer grass has become one of the most limiting aspects of the cow business in the region. In many cases, the cost of summer grass has surpassed the cost of feeding the cow over the winter. This presents some real challenges in an age where so many are trying to maintain the herd they have or expand to capture the market windfall occurring in the cow deal right now. One of the critical aspects of getting the most out of summer grass is general maintenance of pastures and range.

Five pretty easy ways to prevent calf health problems
Over the last several years I have made a big fuss over all of the calf health problems that we seem to have here in Minnesota. I realize that Minnesota’s climate makes it a very unpleasant place to live; and it is unpleasant for cows too. Although there are many different agents and pathways that cause calf health problems, by far and away viral calf scours is the number one culprit of calf death loss and performance lag in the annual Minnesota calf crop.

No, it’s the time of year for the Cow Calf Days Seminar Tour and Trade Show; coming soon to a town near you – at least in balmy and beautiful southern Minnesota. The northern half of this 10-stop tour around Minnesota began two weeks ago and brought together the hardiest of the hardy in this great state.
On Chess: Behind the scenes - and cameras - of the Grand Chess Tour 2017
“This game will be over in two moves.” “…and how long will that take?” “It could be 20 seconds. It could be two hours.” Let’s get one thing clear – 20 seconds is a lifetime when it comes to live television. It’s the real world equivalent of deciding what to wear on a first date, or which of 50 toppings to smother on your froyo. These things take time.
