‘The Evergreen’: Celebrating artist and Portlander Mark Rothko

His art has been auctioned for up to $186 million, but he once turned down a commission at a fancy restaurant because he felt his work wouldn’t be appreciated by the wealthy patrons there. He was raised in Portland and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1921.

Using the gift: The intuitive art of Rick Bartow

Though he died nearly 10 years ago, Oregon artist Rick Bartow may be more celebrated now than ever before. His work is in the collections of over 100 museums across the country. Just last month the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco unveiled Bartow’s largest ever painting, “The Magical Mind in Rural America”(nearly 18 feet long and 6 feet high). And this month, the Portland Art Museum opens Rick Bartow: Storyteller, a new show featuring over 40 paintings, drawings and sculptures.
