A Millennial Voice: The Aftermath
By Danaé Reid Sometimes the storms of life come with a forewarning, and other times it catches you off guard, and sometimes it’s simultaneous. Last week I found myself in a storm that was much bigger than me — so big that I felt I couldn’t handle it. Generally, I’m one of the most positive people that you’ll ever meet, and I pride myself on my optimistic disposition, but last week reminded me that even the strongest levees break after excessive wear and tear.

SUNscopes for the week of September 26, 2021
All Signs: This week we have a lot of energy and a lot of idealism. Mercury is now officially retrograde. Planetary configurations will be encouraging, and then perhaps challenging for some. (Expect fading energy and frustration at trying to deal with practical issues.) It’s a mixed bag! Best to start the week with baby steps. Shrink your ambitious goals and begin small. You can do small. Small will get done. Small is good because it is doable. We like small.

Alawfultruth: The danger of toxic work environments
I was sitting in a meeting some weeks ago and gently explaining a position that I had when I was suddenly cut short by one of my peers. It seems he believed that I was wrong, not entitled to my opinion, and was defiant in wanting to shut me down, because he erroneously thought I was making no sense. Did I say that was just his opinion? I found his abrasiveness to be off-putting and refused to back off my statement and added fuel to his fire by refusing to be quiet simply because he said so.

The Latest: Bad weather means extra bibs for Boston runners
BOSTON — The Latest on the 122nd running of the Boston Marathon (all times local): 10:25 a.m. To deal with the cold weather, elite runners were each given an extra bib in case they decide to shed layers along the Boston Marathon course. Serve Green Pozole with Chicken for Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s defeat of the French army in a battle on that date — May 5 — in 1862. The holiday also happens to coincide with the start of the season for fresh tomatillos. Green Pozole with Chicken, a traditional, stew-y Mexican soup — based on a tomatillo salsa — is the perfect dish for the occasion. Tomatillos are small round fruits native to Mexico that indeed look like green tomatoes.

By the time Protestant Christianity arrived in China in the early 19th century, Chinese understandings of gender roles had been relatively static for more than two millennia. Andrew Langston: WDKX visionary chased his dream
Andrew Langston’s story is more about overcoming obstacles than seeking wealth. Driving A Lamborghini With Ultimate Drive Singapore
Our schedule in Singapore was packed every day so we tried to maintain a balance of culturally educational activities and some activities that were just plain fun. Ultimate Drive fits in the latter category: Pure. Unadulterated. Fun. Several weeks ago, when we were first planning our visit to Singapore, I was having the adrenaline itch again. It had been too long since my last spine tingling adventure and I was feeling the need to attach myself to something with a greater velocity than our scooter.
Rochester’s next chapter
I wasn’t born here and I’m not a historian who can explain in detail the Great Northern Migration, but I’ve learned during my more than 50 years of residency that a large portion of Rochester’s black community knows the relative who brought their family here. Most black families only go back a few generations. For family reunions they travel to communities that sit well below Rochester on a map. My family arrived in Rochester in 1962.
Essay: Our new prison culture
Each year, thousands of musical recordings are released to the listening public over the airwaves and through the Internet. Even if a song is lucky enough to break into a radio station's rotation, few of these songs will become what is considered a timeless classic: A tune that most listeners can make a connection with and that avoids the divisive pitfall of offending a segment of society.
