What was your first job as a journalist?
Freelance contributor to Spectrum, an alternative weekly in Little Rock, Ark. They later hired me as a reporter.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Hell, yes. Learned on an IBM Selectric in high school. I've got a nonfunctional Underwood manual sitting in my house.
How is social media changing news?
It's pulling people away from traditional outlets, but also vastly expanding the audiences available to journalists.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email for initial contact.
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook. It's the best way to keep up with friends around the world, and do so in a storytelling format.
Who do you wish followed you?
National Geographic Magazine. Dan Barry and Margalit Fox of the New York Times. Jon Katz of Bedlam Farm.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I've always wanted to find great stories and share them.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Journalism is changing, not dying. Embrace every new platform, but never forget to write compelling stories.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime. If I can't respond right away, I will soon.
