I graduated from the University of Vermont in 2019 with a degree in Japanese focusing on Japanese literature, and also a certification for teaching English to speakers of other languages. Currently I mainly do work as a book critic reviewing science fiction and fantasy. Articles I've written have been published in the speculative fiction magazine Strange Horizons, and on my personal blog at erichendel.blogspot.com

Something I started thinking about while reading the early chapters of Adam Oyebanji’s novel Esperance was the extent to which this book’s story doesn’t seem like it should work, even when in practice it does. Initially, Esperance frames itself as a very straightforward murder mystery set in contemporary Chicago, with the plot following a detective, Ethan Krol, who is tasked with investigating a bizarre series of killings that seem to defy logical explanation.

Occasionally, I'll read a book whose ending completely alters the nature of the story that preceded it, and which requires that I fundamentally rethink my opinion of how that story functions. In almost every single respect this is usually a good thing, since it inevitably means that I have a ton to think about when it comes to discussing that novel.

In the first chapter of Leanne Su’s novel Peri Peri Paprika, there’s an extended sequence of exposition which initially comes across as a potential liability to the story, but which I think eventually ends up demonstrating the strongest themes of the book. In this scene, Su introduces her main character, Moss, who is stumbling out of her quarters on the intergalactic spacecraft the Rusty Raccoon after awakening from an alcohol-induced hangover.
