Erik Heine is a freelance journalist who specializes in film and film music. He holds a PhD in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin, and is a Full Professor of Music at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, where he has taught since 2005.
He is the author of two books––James Newton Howard's Signs: A Film Score Guide (Scarecrow Press), and The Music of the How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy: A Guide to the Score of John Powell (McFarland Books).
Erik is a regular contributor to Film Score Monthly Online, where he writes feature articles and conducts interview with composers, and The Cinematic Journal, where he focuses on interviews with European-born and European-based film composers.
He is currently working on a book about the 1990 MLB draft class, specifically those selected in the first round, with a connection to baseball cards from both then and now.
Erik is also a duo runner, pushing his disabled son in a wheelchair in every race. Because of his son, he founded Team Hoyt Oklahoma, following in the footsteps of Dick and Rick Hoyt. Erik and his son have completed two marathons together, as well as nearly a dozen races of half marathon or longer lengths, and countless 5Ks.
