Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Of course! I'm nearly 50 at the time of answering this question.

Who do you wish followed you?

Some of the major writers on film music, such as Tim Grieving and Jon Burlingame, as well as sports journalists, specifically baseball ones.

Why did you become a journalist?

To expand my own knowledge about the field and to help tell the stories of those involved.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The two-part The Marvels Project for Film Score Monthly. Laura Karpman's music was fantastic and massive and amazing.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

My editor at Film Score Monthly told me I should write THE book on the music in the "How to Train Your Dragon films." So I did!

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

An ask to review a film music history book where the author confused Richard Strauss and Johann Strauss within the first five pages.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Film composers wait for inspiration. Or that they can write any music they see fit. Every aspect of film is collaborative.
