Wat maakt ons tot mens? Vaak beantwoorden filosofen die vraag door te zeggen dat mensen rationeel zijn, in tegenstelling tot dieren. We kunnen nadenken over onszelf en de wereld, en we hebben creativiteit. Maar tegenwoordig zijn computers rationeler dan wij, scheppen ze kunst en vellen ze morele oordelen. Zijn computers dan mensen? Volgens de wetenschap verschillen we dan weer niet van dieren en bestaat ons bewustzijn uit niets meer dan elektrische signalen in ons brein.

For almost three decades, cognitive science has accommodated a creative tension between the traditional computational view of the mind, which downplays the importance of the physical body, and embodied cognitive science, which emphasizes that cognition strongly depends on the body.
