The Canadian High-Speed Rail Files
It has been suggested that I include a summary of my articles at the top for those who do not wish to read a long, sourced article. I will do so going forward and add one to the important older articles. The Short Version The government approved a high-speed rail project using a business case that never studied high-speed rail.
Canadian Law Firm Data: Six Month Update
About six months ago I published my first review of the Pirical data on the top twenty nine largest law firms in Canada (the 30th firm’s data is not yet on Pirical’s radar). I recently updated the data to see what is happening in the market as we approach the busy fall season. All numbers referred to in this article are twelve month rolling figures.

Oh Canada, I hope we are okay.
Happy Canada Day! In a week that included a not-quite coup in Russia, riots in France and politically motivated Supreme Court decisions in the United States, I am feeling blessed to have been born in Canada. We should all take a moment today to think about just how lucky we are. However, we should also think about just how fragile democracy can be. Our American cousins are an excellent example of how things can fairly quickly go terribly wrong.
Erin Durant recognized in Best Lawyers in Canada but Durant Barristers Declines Marketing Ad-ons.
For the third straight year, Erin Durant has been recognized by her peers for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in Canada publication. This year, Erin is recognized by fellow lawyers in a voting process in the areas of Corporate and Commercial Litigation, Insurance Law and Professional Malpractice Law. While we are honoured to receive recognition, we have also spent some time thinking about the utility and ethics of the large number of legal awards and ranking services.

Six Songs, by Jack Harris
Ben Walker did a great job producing these few songs. He wanted to make it intimate, pared down, live takes, no click, like I'm sitting in the room with you, a few beers at hand. I think he nailed it. Thanks for the great work, Ben! Extra points for the shimmering mandolin lines... The brilliant, multi-talented Jess Morgan is one of my best friends. She did the artwork for this record, capturing the spirit of the thing perfectly. Beautiful work, Morg! Hard to believe we recorded this two years ago.

Access to justice grinds to a halt
Two steps forward and one step back. That is how some describe the pace of progress toward better access to justice for ordinary Canadians. Recent events in Ontario, however, suggest that we may no longer be moving forward at all. Access to justice is under attack. “The immediate cuts are approximately 30 per cent of Legal Aid Ontario’s budget and, apparently, 100 per cent of its services for refugee and immigration law services,” write Sherif Foda and Erin Durant.
