KALAMAZOO, MI -- Kalamazoo Deacons Conference is taking joggers, walkers and "casual strollers" on a tour of the Northside neighborhood, where it's been serving people for more than 40 years. "On the north side, there's a sign that says 'Gateway to Kalamazoo.' They are the heart of the community and yet a lot of people don't have a reason to come there," Joni Groendyk, race co-coordinator, said.

Walter Horn, also known as "Walt,"  celebrated his birthday at the Bowman House, an assisted living community in Three Rivers Wednesday with pizza, balloons, a little music and a big cake. The only thing bothering him Wednesday was the weather, which was giving him aches and pains in his leg, the beginnings of arthritis. The Bowman House calls it "Arthur." "He's in excellent shape," Arlene Parsons, activities director said.
