What was your first job as a journalist?
I've only ever worked in media: high school, college, career. First paid role was in Los Angeles, 2002-06. Then I moved to New York City.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. It's fun, but I can't imagine typing 500, 700, 1,200, 3,000, 5,000 words and beyond without the delete button. *So much respect*

What does it mean to be a journalist?
What does it mean to be human, to be curious, to be compassionate, to be interested? To care?

I don't follow news-related hashtags
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email; it's the only (somewhat) consistent way to reach me when I'm traveling.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Laptop, phone, hands, etc. typical freelancer arrangement.

Why did you become a journalist?
Because I've always had a way with words and am innately curious about the world.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes. I was on staff for two years; last (senior) year I was 1 of 3 EIC's (we had a triumvirate) as well as the Business Manager.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I dislike favorite questions and this is one in disguise. Can anyone choose between their children? (Well yes, but not on record.)
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
When you see that proverbial thread hanging, something that sparks your interest or curiosity, pull it, and see where it takes you.
When's the best time to pitch you?
I am always working, in whatever timezone I'm in, so pitch me whenever – just don't ever be surprised about the time of my reply.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
I hate favorite questions.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
This is the opposite of a favorite question, which I despise even more. Who cares? Why would I remember? Move on. Onwards and upwards.
What's your favorite drink?
Ditto.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On a plane, or else soaking in the sun for a few moments, walking on the sunny side of the street as I run my errands.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Just trying to get through this...
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
As my primary beat is travel, pretty much everyone besides my husband and other travel writers think that I'm on holiday all of the time.
