Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
In terms of professional (and not freelance/blogging for third party websites), my first true journalist role was with Soapbox Digital Media
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I have never used a typewriter, but I plan on investing in one to utilize with my writing but also to hold as a vintage item.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is instantaneous. The way the digital age is changing news, marketing and media is truly a reflection of user-generated content
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Rory Gilmore or Carrie Bradshaw
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a journalist means getting words out there, whatever the latest news and trends may be. Being a journalist means developing YOUR style
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#twaculate (twitter calculations); that just seems really fun and creative to me
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I like an elevator pitch; while details are important, I like hearing a broad outline and researching myself.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
WordPress, Blogger, Microsoft Office, social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, and Pressfolios are great tools to use as a journalist.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter is constantly being put to the challenge with second-by-second updated material!
Who do you wish followed you?
I'd love at least one big name news, lifestyle, entertainment, or celebrity following. That would be awesome to get my name to just one.
Why did you become a journalist?
My passion for writing goes far beyond what my personal pages could accomplish. Being a journalist means you are reaching out to more people
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I didn't work for my high school newspaper, but I wrote a lot in college at NKU for The Northerner.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
While in college, my journalism studies focused on newswriting, as seen by my publications in The Northerner.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Keep writing. Whether you think you have an audience of 1 or 100, keep writing. There's no harm in getting your name out there!
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime is a good time to pitch a story. With mobile devices and social media, it's so easy to do research and take notes on the go.
What's your favorite drink?
You can never go wrong with water. As a runner, water is usually my go to beverage!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
I'm not always at a computer, but you can usually find me running or outside enjoying the weather!
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I love keeping up with Beck's The Blaze. Currently one of my favorite publications!
