Erin Kayata
VerifiedErin Kayata’s Biography
I took my first journalism class as a freshman in high school. The course was meant for upperclassmen, but I was hungry to get as many writing courses in as possible. I liked the class, but what really made me decide to be a journalist was watching the film "Confessions of a Shopaholic." The main character wrote an article comparing personal finance to shoe shopping and I loved the idea that journalism could be so creative! I was immediately hooked. I chose to go to Emerson College for their excellent journalism program and their central location in beautiful Boston.
My passion now is creating quality content through my writing and editing. I love looking at stories and seeing how I can improve them and make them more readable and compelling. I'm open to exploring all areas of journalism and have written about everything from wedding dress costs to Small Business Saturday.
Currently, I cover education for the Stamford Advocate, a position I got while completing a regional reporting fellowship with Hearst Connecticut Media. I write daily stories covering school board politics, trends in schools, as well as interesting programs and events involving students.
In the past, I covered education and cops for weekly newspapers in Darien and New Canaan. I also worked as a metro correspondent for the Boston Globe, covering breaking news in the greater Boston area and taking calls that come to the news tip line. I took this position after completing, a co-op program at the Globe, assisting and writing for the Magazine, Travel, and Address sections. I've written for the destination wedding website, Destination42.com and for Motif Magazine of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. My work has also appeared on HerCampus.com and USA Today College.
As a student at Emerson, I wrote for HerCampus' Emerson chapter and for the student literary publication, The Common Voice. I also served as a section editor and the managing editor for a student lifestyle magazine, Atlas. My coursework mostly focused on print journalism, but I also worked with video, audio, and photos in my classes. I also gained proficiency in platforms such as Wordpress.
