Enhancing cognitive stimulation at home: PlayReadVIP for Brazilian families
ABSTRACT Parenting practices, such as reading aloud, teaching, and playing, make an important contribution to early relational health and are associated with long-term child development and school readiness. This study investigated whether participation in an evidence-based parent–child interaction programme (PlayReadVIP) adapted to Brazil for virtual delivery was associated with changes in cognitive stimulation.

PLOS ONE, Jul 2023 Considerable evidence demonstrates the importance of the cognitive home environment in supporting children’s language, cognition, and school readiness more broadly. This is particularly important for children from low-income backgrounds, as cognitive stimulation is a key area of resilience that mediates the impact of poverty on child development.

How psilocybin therapy helped Bethesda-area patients combat depression
Evan Craig created the artwork throughout this story after receiving treatment with a synthetic version of psilocybin at the Aquilino Cancer Center in Rockville. The artwork shows what he saw while hallucinating, and the quotes printed with the images are descriptions from Craig. Lying on a sofa bed with his eyes closed behind thick black eyeshades, Evan Craig envisioned a large greenish creature with a woman’s torso, the bulging eyes and pincers of an insect, and a serpent’s tail.
El Mercat Bar de Tapas in Rockville offers Spanish dishes with flair
The intoxicating aroma of gambas al ajillo—shrimp nestled in piping hot olive oil infused with garlic, bay leaf, red chile and Spanish paprika—arrives at my table well before the small earthenware crock holding it does at El Mercat Bar de Tapas. The crustaceans are perfectly cooked and kissed with spritzes of lemon juice to impart acidity and cut the richness of the tasty oil, which gets sopped up by three accompanying slices of toasted bread.

He makes four kinds (pictured on opposite page, from left: super seed, traditional, sesame and another loaf of traditional; not pictured: rustic), all with organic flour.
Agents and teams with the top sales
Residential real estate is big business in Montgomery County and Upper Northwest D.C. Last year, 9,782 detached single-family homes were sold in those areas for a total of about $7.9 billion, according to Bright MLS. Not surprisingly, a large number of real estate agents live in Montgomery County—8,515 associate brokers, brokers and salespeople, according to the Maryland Real Estate Commission. But real estate agents don’t all perform equally.

In their own words The short stories and essays that took the top prizes in our writing competition June 27, 2021 | 9:21 pm 2021 Short Story & Essay Contest Bethesda Magazine and the Bethesda Urban Partnership sponsor an annual competition for local writers. This year, 304 adults and high school students entered the short story contest, and 222 adults and high school students entered the essay contest. The writers who placed in the contests were awarded cash prizes ranging from $25 to $500.

Adult Short Story Judges Caroline Bock is the author of Carry Her Home, winner of the 2018 Fiction Prize from the Washington Writers’ Publishing House, and the young adult novels LIE and Before My Eyes. Bock also co-edited This Is What America Looks Like: Poetry & Fiction from DC, Maryland and Virginia from the Washington Writers’ Publishing House, published in February 2021. Bock is working on a novel set in 2050.
