Participatory monitoring drives biodiversity knowledge in global protected areas - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract Protected areas are central in strategies to conserve biodiversity. Effective area-based conservation relies on biodiversity data, but the current biodiversity knowledge base is insufficient and limited by geographic and taxonomic biases. Public participation in biodiversity monitoring such as via community-based monitoring or citizen science increases data collection but also contributes to replicating these biases or introducing new ones.
Joint reply to 'Rewriting results in the language of compatibility' by V. Amrhein and S. Greenland, and to 'The evidence contained in the P-value is context-dependent' by F. Hartig and F. Barraquand
In our recent opinion article we promoted an approach for interpreting P-values as continuous but informal measures of evidence [ 1. Muff S. et al. Rewriting results sections in the language of evidence. Trends Ecol. Evol. 2022; 37: 203-210 ]. Our aim was to propagate a pragmatic way forward for those who are willing to leave significance testing behind. Instead of advocating for a total change of approach, which is less likely to be effective, evidence language is easy to use.
Response to ‘Why P-values are not measures of evidence’ by D. Lakens
In our recent opinion article in TREE [ 1. Muff S. et al. Rewriting results sections in the language of evidence. ], we suggested that P-values should be interpreted gradually, rather than dichotomously, and with reference to degrees of evidence instead of to statistical significance. Gradual interpretation is consistent with advice given in several statistical text books [ , 3. Bland M. An Introduction to Medical Statistics. 4th edn.
Rewriting results sections in the language of evidence
Highlights It has been known for decades that there are severe problems associated with null-hypothesis significance testing (NHST) based on arbitrary P-value thresholds (e.g., P = 0.05). A small literature review indicates that much of the current research in ecology and evolution is still disregarding the warnings and frequently relies on binary decisions based on P-values to report statistical significance.
Hunting strategies to increase detection of chronic wasting disease in cervids
Abstract The successful mitigation of emerging wildlife diseases may involve controversial host culling. For livestock, ‘preemptive host culling’ is an accepted practice involving the removal of herds with known contact to infected populations. When applied to wildlife, this proactive approach comes in conflict with biodiversity conservation goals.
Wolf reintroduction to Scotland: public attitudes and consequences for red deer management
Large predators have been extirpated from much of their historical range (e.g. Mech 1995). This has resulted in elevated densities of large herbivores in areas where human hunting has not replaced natural predation in limiting population growth (see e.g. Gordon et al. 2004).
