Influencing Multifamily
As we come out of the pandemic to a new economy, it seems likely that the creator economy will continue to grow. This will have a major impact on the multifamily sector. The current way most technology platforms monetize is based on attention at scale. More eyeballs and clicks results in more advertising.
In the age of remote work, hotels serve a new purpose
Since the onset of the forced work-from-home era, many of us at CitizenM kept asking ourselves the same question: How is Zoom going to impact our business? We rely heavily on corporate travel and bringing people together in person. Are we structurally impaired? Or are we back to normal once a vaccine is available? For us to understand the future of corporate travel, we decided to first understand what the future of work looks like. This dragged us down a long, multi-month rabbit hole of remote work.
Bladee's '333' - Cherwell
Bladee’s music is either airy transcendence – kitsch done perfect – or the worst thing you’ve ever heard. Autotuned, breathy rapping over cloudy, mellow instrumentals tends to incite this kind of polarisation. His newest album 333 brings the stellar production of long-time collaborator Whitearmor together with Bladee’s unusual, off-kilter vocals under a happier, optimistic, and spiritually-tinged banner.
Comfort Films - Stand By Me
Childhood is a slippery concept. One day we’re reading comics with grubby, chocolate-stained fingers at 4 o’clock on a Wednesday, the next day it’s a rush through university, work, marriage and whatever else we take as a synecdoche for adulthood. Sometimes we are ignorant dwellers on the threshold, or else dragged kicking and screaming across this boundary by a stark moment of realization or trauma.
The fourth wall: Looking beyond the lens
Beautiful, sprightly music plays as the two protagonists of Pierrot Le Fou (1965), Ferdinand and Marianne, cruise around in the countryside in a stolen Ford Galaxie. The film is Godard at his cheeky best – bright colours, violence, making movies about movies.
Friday Favourites: The works of Svetlana Alexievich
Svetlana Alexievich’s works are not an easy read. On the face of it, they are oral histories of the Second World War, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the Chernobyl disaster. Lucid, chilling accounts reveal how trauma and suffering are variously experienced, memorialized, and do not go forgotten. She does not speak for the individuals that have witnessed and experienced these calamities, but allows their fears, hopes and dreams to speak to the reader.
A Call To Reconsider Hiring Wisdom In Silicon Valley
According to Silicon Valley lore, entrepreneurs are born with a compulsion to create and build. They’ve been held up as rare, special and maybe a little eccentric. But today, every company is a tech company, and the tech community needs to broaden its thinking about who joins the fellowship of entrepreneurs, what constitutes “talent” and how skills and experience are defined. As a former Green Beret, my path to startup life was a far cry from that of the model entrepreneur — at least on paper.
In praise of formal hall
Formal hall at Keble College, Oxford Formal dinners are an unusual microcosm of Oxford life. A (generally) subsidised college service of hugely variable quality, good odds of making awkward eye contact with someone you vaguely recognise from that bop, and a great opportunity to drink on a Wednesday. They easily become just part of college routine – or one of those things you do once and never again. All this, however, changes when you don your gown to step into another college’s hall.
