Digital municipal currencies as a new municipalist instrument for trans-local transformation: The case of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Introduction In the latest municipal elections in Brazil, held in October 2024, 96 municipalities chose a candidate whose political programme included the introduction of a Digital Municipal Currency (DMC), 62% of which would be implemented to distribute Basic Income (BI). Among these, 11 DMCs for BI distribution have already been implemented (Diniz et al., 2025).
