EUROPE: The Maastricht Manifesto for Integrated, Sustainable & Inclusive Mobility was signed on June 6 at the EPF Conference 2026. The manifesto, drafted by the European Passengers’ Federation, the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and the European Disability Forum, calls for more structural funding for sustainable mobility and urges policymakers to prioritise passenger-centric transport policies.

Czech Republic cuts back ETCS rollout targets due to rising costs

CZECH REPUBLIC: Infrastructure manager Správa Železnic has significantly scaled back its signalling and electrification plans, cutting the 2026-30 target for ETCS installation from 3 780 km to just 730 km. The revision was prompted by the higher-than expected costs of ETCS equipment, limited capacity in the supply market and the growing use of battery trains.

Finland selects Rail Nordica planners to develop standard gauge links

The Torne River dual gauge railway bridge between Haparanda, Sweden and Tornio, Finland. FINLAND: Infrastructure manager Väylävirasto has appointed a consortium of Sweco and AFRY to plan the Rail Nordica project to create sections of 1 435 mm gauge railway to better connect northern Finland with Sweden. The contract covers the planning for the Rail Nordica project between now and 2030. The consortium, named Pohjantähti, will begin the development phase later this month.
