Beneath the glassy eyes of white-tailed deer and caribou mounts, a woodstove crackled. Coyote furs, bear skins, and photos of brook trout also adorned the walls at Tim Pond Wilderness Camps, and through a spotting scope by the window, a young bull moose could be spied trotting along the water’s edge. Between mouthfuls of bread rolls, broccoli-cheddar soup, scalloped potatoes, green beans, and slabs of ham, guests chatted excitedly about a chill in the air.

In the distance, on this particular night, a faint pink mass of Aurora Borealis dances across the sky. It’s not a bad view.
