How GitHub uses GitHub Actions and Actions larger runners to build and test GitHub.com
The Developer Experience (DX) team at GitHub collaborated with a number of other teams to work on moving our continuous integration (CI) system to GitHub Actions to support the development and scaling demands of our engineering team. Our goal as a team is to enable our engineers to confidently and quickly ship software. To that end, we’ve worked on providing paved paths, a suite of automated tools and applications to streamline our development, runtime platforms, and deployments.
Switching from Bitbucket Server and Bamboo to GitHub just got easier
Starting from February 15, 2024, Atlassian will no longer offer technical support, security updates or vulnerability fixes for their Server products like Bitbucket Server and Bamboo Server. Switching from these tools to GitHub Enterprise Cloud and GitHub Actions has become easier, safer, and even more seamless, with today’s launch of new migration tools.
Building organization-wide governance and re-use for CI/CD and automation with GitHub Actions
Setting the scene A strong focus on automation can reap benefits, particularly in your development workflow and DevOps lifecycle. We know that continuous integration (CI) can help accelerate development and enhance overall quality, while continuous delivery (CD) and continuous deployment (CD) can help reduce time-to-production and test for quality in live environments (for example, API fuzzing, infrastructure-as-code [IaC] validation, performance and load testing, and much more).
Introducing required workflows and configuration variables to GitHub Actions
Today, we are introducing two new features for GitHub Actions to help standardize policies and reduce duplication, required workflows and configuration variables. Read on for what this means for your DevOps processes. Required workflows Required workflows in GitHub Actions are now available in public beta.
Introducing GitHub Actions Importer
We’re excited to announce a public preview of GitHub Actions Importer, which helps you forecast, plan, and facilitate migrations from your current CI/CD tool to GitHub Actions. Doing individual migrations is relatively easy in isolation. However, for companies that have a large and established CI/CD footprint, having tooling available to assist with migrations is key to their ability to adopt Actions at scale.
GitHub partners with Arm to revolutionize Internet of Things software development with GitHub Actions
We are all well aware that work paradigms have had to shift, and this is no less true for those businesses devoted to developing Internet of Things (IoT) devices. According to a recent survey from Arm, the new remote workforce is a key consideration for more than 70 percent of respondents in regards to designing future devices.
How the GitHub Security Team uses projects and GitHub Actions for planning, tracking, and more
One of the best parts about working at GitHub is using GitHub to build GitHub—and not only for software development. Many of us have worked for companies that create products we love. Yet fewer of us have worked for organizations that build products across the full software development lifecycle that can be used for almost every piece of our daily flow. Instead of stringing together multiple third-party services to meet our needs, GitHub provides a tool for nearly everything.
A beginner’s guide to CI/CD and automation on GitHub
The first time I saw a CI/CD pipeline in action was a real wake-up moment. I was working at a company that used GitHub Actions to cut its release times down to five minutes. And if any issues cropped up, you could roll back a release with the touch of a button. At that time, I had just finished a stint at a startup where the release process was far more manual and far more anxiety-inducing.
How to start using reusable workflows with GitHub Actions
From automating repetitive tasks to building continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines, you can do a lot with GitHub Actions. But until recently, you had to copy and paste YAML files from one repository to another if you wanted to use them in more than one place. Enter reusable workflows, which officially launched in 2021 and offer a simple and powerful way to avoid copying and pasting workflows across your repositories.

The start to the new year has been a hectic one, with some people slowly coming back to work, and others deciding to continue coding from home. Whether developing from the comfort of your house – or at a random cafe – it hasn’t stopped the community from shipping awesome open source projects and updates. Everything from big open source libraries to weekend hobbies have been built and shipped over the last month. Here’s this month’s top staff picks on projects that shipped major version releases.
How to build a CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions in four simple steps
Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) has long been—and continues to be—the domain of DevOps experts. But with the introduction of native CI/CD to GitHub in 2019 via GitHub Actions, it’s easier than ever to bring CI/CD directly into your workflow right from your repository. That’s a great thing. As developers, we’re trained to use peer reviews to make sure our code works. But I’m here to tell you we need to disrupt the peer review.
5 automations every developer should be running
TL;DR: For any developer looking to avoid security vulnerabilities, buttons that don’t work, slow site speeds, or manually writing release notes this is for you. As developers, we get a bad rap for not writing tests—or automations for that matter—as much as we should. It’s not that we don’t do it (well, maybe some of us don’t). But it’s a fact that writing more code can be a little more fun than spending time writing tests and automations.
10 GitHub Actions resources to bookmark from the basics to CI/CD
TL;DR: Tips on how to get started using GitHub Actions and resources to learn more about making it work for you. From automating workflows to ordering pizza to building cloud pipelines, GitHub Actions can do a lot. Introduced in 2018, GitHub Actions offers powerful workflow automation and CI/CD functionality that’s platform-native and accessible right from your repository on GitHub. Plus, it’s available to GitHub Free accounts with 2,000 minutes of workflow computing time per month.
An Update on Pa.’s Local Employment Laws and What May Come Next
Ethan M. Dennis, Clark Hill Over the past few years, Congress has operated at a deadlock, preventing major new federal workplace legislation from being adopted. Although in its infancy, it seems increasingly unlikely that this Congressional term will see a wave of new workplace legislation. Despite this Congressional deadlock, federal workplace law continues to evolve as the courts and agencies interpret, and sometimes make, policy.
In Landmark Decision, Federal District Court Holds the ADA Protects Gender Dysphoria
In Blatt v. Cabela's Retail, Inc., No. 5:14-CV-04822 (E.D. Pa. May 18, 2017), a federal judge in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania allowed a transgender plaintiff to pursue a claim against the outdoor retail chain under the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") for alleged discrimination on the basis of her gender dysphoria (also known as gender identity disorder) and for retaliating against her for opposing that discrimination.
