Top-down influence on food web efficiency We assessed the hypothesis that top predators induce consistent and predictable responses at lower trophic levels (Hairston et al. 1960). We did not observe a relationship between variation in top trophic position and food web efficiency across sites, a result consistent with studies finding that strong top-down effects of predators are uncommon or co-mediated by other factors (Power 1992).
